Chapter 3 – Audacity
* * *
“So, Mr. White. You are saying that Ms. Forger bullied Ms. Sanders since she learned that you have a thing for her? Am I right?”
Mrs. Durns, the principal, is wearing an unconcerned reaction as she lists the accusations toward my end. It was a bright new day, and I couldn’t believe that I would be able to witness another stupid characteristic of my fiancé.
Eren’s audacity reached the rooftop of our school when he suddenly barged into the principal’s office, forcing this nice old woman to hear his report.
It was one stupid move since Mrs. Durns should be the last person who should dip her toes in this matter. She might be the head of the school, but Eren mindlessly set aside the hierarchy and brushed off the teachers who should be handling this matter.
Just thinking that this man would be my husband soon already sent a throbbing head in my way.
“Yes, Ma’am. I believe that this matter is of great concern. Ali’s bullying is affecting Lynn’s grades. Just look at her eyes, she’d been crying nonstop, saying that she no longer wanted to go to school. Please do her justice. Lynn doesn’t deserve this treatment.”
Horrible sobs followed Eren’s response.
Lynn promptly rubbed her eyes as Eren caressed her back. They are perfectly in sync, as if it was them who got engaged when they were young and the pair who were promised to each other by their parents.
Bitterness is not in my blood, yet I couldn’t help but be annoyed by Eren’s stupidity.
It was true that there was no love between us. Our marriage was arranged so our families could freely support each other’s business without restraint. It has been explained to us over and over again, making it a point that all we need to do is accept our faith.
We’ve been friends and allies since we were young. I knew that he was not the brightest boy, but his kindness made me see him in a favorable light. It doesn’t matter even if my heart doesn’t skip a beat as long as we are in a harmonious relationship.
However, Eren changed for the worse after meeting this leech-like woman. Like I told him, I don’t give a damn even if they share a relationship as long as Eren does not forget his responsibility.
Falling in love with someone else is something that we can never remove from our lives.
The same applies to me.
“Hmmm. Mr. White. I believe that it will be hard. You see, all of the accusations that you are saying are unfounded and have no direct evidence. If Ms. Forger pushed Ms. Sanders down the stairs, then she should’ve been hospitalized. However, she was unable to present any medical records. For the grades, I was told that Ms. Sanders is not exceptionally bright…”
Lynn’s face turned red after hearing Ms. Durns’ analysis. I gave them the same reasonings, yet these two truly have a world of their own, following a set of logic that only they could understand.
Understanding their deal is the hardest thing that I could do in this lifetime.
“…Saying that it was Ms. Forger’s fault for Ms. Sander’s poor standing is wrong in every possible way. However, Mr. White, if you truly believe that there is a case of bullying between them, then just present a single piece of evidence and I will surely make a move.”
Mrs. Durns extended her arms, pointing us out to the door. It only means that our foolish conversation finally came to an end. I breathed a sigh of relief and thanked her with all my heart before leaving the room.
Eren’s face says that he is not contented with that verdict, but the strict eyes of our principal pushed him to walk out. It must be hard for him to show his love that he was incapable of doing anything for her.
Poor Eren. I think I was partly at fault since I fed him a lot of useless fairytales when we were young. This man grew up thinking that there is a prince for every princess and Lynn Sanders is that woman for him. What a freakingly pathetic dunce!
“Hey, Ali. Stop right there.”
We are now in the hallway, giving Eren a chance to corner me once more. Lynn is hiding behind him while her arms tangled like snakes with Eren’s. I was getting tired of these shenanigans, and all I could hope for now was to go back to my comfy room.
“What?”
“Don’t what me, Ali. I already asked you nicely, so you had better remember this day. Never touch Lynn again or I’ll show you what it means to have an enemy. Also, ask your parents to cancel our engagement. Just thinking that we were in that kind of relationship made me tremble in anger.”
A grin was drawn on my face to hide my disappointment.
Sixteen years, Eren and I shared those damn years with each other. We were like siblings who knew each other’s secrets, yet here he is turning deaf ears and blind eyes over the truth. He, of all people, should’ve known better.
I’m not the kind of person who will turn into a savage monkey just because of jealousy. I was mature for my age, and that is more than enough reason for their claim to be completely invalid.
“Eren…it was the same for me. I would have canceled our engagement if I had the power to do so. Just imagine it, my fiancé is flirting with someone else, right under my nose, and here I am being accused of something that I did not even do…”
This is not about love, I knew it.
However, the amount of disrespect and betrayal between us almost moved me to tears. I clenched my hands and looked at Eren’s eyes. Lynn could hide for all I care, but never would I give a damn about her.
Whatever game she is playing, she can play it on her own. Her venomous tears will never work on me and so are the stupid accusations she throws my way. Seriously, she had better invest her time in her studies than start something that she can’t win.
“…What would you feel if you were in my shoes?”
I turned my back and did not wait for my fiancé’s answer. He could break the engagement for all I care, but I, Ali Forger, will never be an instrument to the puppy love between these two.
