Chapter 6 – The End of My First Love

Different reactions fill the room.
Eren retained the stupidity on his face while his parents almost stopped breathing on the spot. My parents, on the other hand, almost fell out of the chair, wearing the funniest expression that they could ever have.
Even the man who I offered that marriage could not help but gawk with disbelief. Steve did not even hide how flabbergasted he was regarding the statement that he received. Amusement, however, could also be seen in Steve’s face.
“You are not funny, Ali. Take this seriously, please. Steve is twice your age! He even helped in changing your diaper when you and Eren were still nothing but tadpoles.” Exhalated by my mother. She was trying to disguise my solution as a joke, but I could see in her eyes that she knew that none of it was a jest.
I might be a brat, but I was not raised as a spoiled chick by my parents. They pampered me – yes, but never to the point that I turned unreasonable and selfish like Eren.
The weight of this engagement has been deeply imbued in my mind and heart, giving me no reason to take it lightly.
So, I deeply inhaled before giving my full attention to them. “I’m dead serious and I don’t care even if Steve is twice my age. We’ve known each other since I was young, and you are all aware of how capable he is. I’d rather marry him than stick with a boy who couldn’t differentiate the right from the wrong.”
My mother no longer hides her animosity.
It was a very rare instance, but she had a tendency to resort to physical violence when she truly reached her limit. I guess I was able to trigger that ‘rare instance’ since her fingers were busily pinching my sides.
Well, it was kind of humorous since I saw my father rubbing his forehead. It was a good sign that he was trying to consider my suggestion. This is the main reason why I respect my father the most.
Others might see him as a greedy man who only thinks about money, but all his actions greatly comply with logic and common sense. If not for his decision-making ability, then we would never be able to be this successful in the business field.
“See! She’s insane. No young woman would be sane enough to marry an old man. I’m sure this witch has daddy issues! I seriously don’t want to marry her now.” Exclaimed Eren. He was panting like a dog as he stretched his arm to point at me.
The frown on his face was replaced with an annoying grin, which was directly attributed to me.
I gave her no mind since my undivided attention had been offered to Steve. That old man might have felt my stare, forcing him to look back at me. Steve’s dark brown eyes screamed complicated emotions as I passed on my intent to be his wife.
At the same time, the way he reacted to those ‘daddy issues’ almost sent me rolling on the floor.
“Shut up, Eren. Get back to your seat and close your mouth…” Uncle Hugo’s face is completely red as he pushes his son back to his seat.
I guess it was hard for him to accept that I chose to marry an old man rather than have his son as my husband. It was a great defeat on their part since they raised Eren to be that kind of person.
Just too bad. I like this couple a lot and having them as my in-laws would be nothing but perfect. The only problem is that their only son came out to be the biggest i***t of all time.
Before I could add any additional variable to my reasoning, Uncle Eren finally looked at me, now wearing his usual mild expression “…I hate to say this, but Ali has all the right to get mad at my son. Even so, marrying Steve could not even be considered a solution. How about we set this aside for another day?”
My father nodded while my mother sighed, accepting defeat.
I, on the contrary, steeled my mind before opening my lips once again. There is no way that I will let this drag on to another day without receiving a conclusion.
With all my might, I explained. “No, Uncle. I’m not willing to sleep after being embarrassed like that by Eren. I’d rather be a spinster than get married to him. Please allow my engagement to Steve. This is the best solution for all of us.”
My face was instantly distorted when my mother’s nails dug deeper into my skin. I’m sure it will turn into a big bruise tomorrow.
It would be better if her pinching ended while we were in Eren’s house. Needless to say, and knowing my mother, I’m sure that there will always be a more terrible part two once it was just us.
As if to support my claim, my mother rested her head on my shoulder before whispering the worst threat she could ever give. “Stop it, Ali. Any more of this and I will surely tie you in a tree full of ants.”
Woah, scary. It was hard to guess if my mother was serious or not, but what I can tell is that I would suffer from something equivalent to that.
“Haha. Okay, that’s enough. At least ask for my opinion. I exist here, you know…” Steve finally broke his silence while looking at me with a hint of playfulness. It was hard to tell if he took my words seriously or not.
Uncle Hugo and my father simultaneously coughed while Eren smirked like the brat that he was. My mother, thankfully, stopped pinching my sides after Steve’s eyes looked at her fingers.
See? He might be the placid type, but Steve’s impact could never be belittled. I witnessed how great he was at helping with the family business, yet the man himself kept on denying it.
“…Well, it’s my honor to be considered by such a capable woman, but it will be impossible for us. I’m truly sorry, Ali.” Steve’s smile is still the sweetest as he delivers my rejection.
Unfortunately, for him, I am not the type who surrenders without a fight. “Why, Steve? I don’t mind your age and we can get married right after I finish high school.” If he wants to remove his name from this conversation, then he needs to provide the most logical reason.
There is no way that I would just wave my white flag right in front of the only man who could make my heart skip a beat.
“I am getting married next month. Sorry, Ali. Try to think of another way to get out of this mess.”
That line almost broke my heart.
