Chapter one
“You’re fired, effective immediately.”
“What?”
I stared at my husband, Davian Cadmus, as he gave me a contemptuous look that made it seem as if I was something smelly that he had stepped on by accident.
“Didn’t you hear me? I said you’re fired. I don’t want to see you in my office, or in my company.”
I blinked. I could not even begin to understand what I was hearing.
As I stood in the middle of Davian’s office at a loss for words, I heard the door slide open, and the last person I expected to see sauntered in as if she owned the place.
Agatha Waters, the woman that I had fired just the day before. What was she doing here?
Agatha walked past me as she shot me an evil, triumphant smile, and planted her perky behind on Davian’s desk.
“Davian, what is sh –,”
“I decided to bring back Agatha after you fired her,” he interrupted me. “What you did was an abuse of power, and it should never have happened.”
“I don’t understand,” I said. “Firing and hiring people is literally my job –,”
“And I said it isn’t anymore!” Davian suddenly thundered, standing over his desk and looming over everyone in the room. “Are you suddenly deaf, Imogen?”
“Calm down, Davian. Don’t let her stress you too much.” Agatha suddenly spoke up, drawing my attention. She stared at me with a victorioussmile as she caressed Davian's chest, acting less like an employee and more like…
Ah. I see what’s going on now.
“How could I have been so blind?” I whispered. “You’re sleeping with Agatha now, aren’t you? Is that what this is about?”
Davian, who had calmed down after Agatha touched him, sneered at me once more.
“And what does it matter if I am? We’ve never loved each other, Imogen.”
“I’m still your wife, you bastard!”
Davian smiled, then reached for a folder at his desk and flung it towards me.
“Not anymore. You will sign those papers this instant,” he commanded.
Confused, I reached down for the papers with trembling fingers, and then froze when I saw what was written inside it.
‘DIVORCE AGREEMENT’, printed in bold red letters.
“W-What is this?”
“The document that I told you to sign, dimwit,” Davian scoffed. “Are you deaf as well as stupid?”
“This is a divorce agreement.”
“Indeed.”
I swallowed. Did Davian really hate me that much, that he couldn’t wait to get rid of me?
“We never talked about this. Why? Why now?”
“In case you’ve forgotten, our marriage contract ends today, Imogen,” Davian said, and my eyes widened in realization. He smiled.
“Yes. I don’t need you anymore, and you don’t need me. The last payment has already been made to your account. Now, sign that document and leave my company; you’re fired effective immediately.”
So this was it. My marriage to Davian Cadmus would come to an end, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I looked up at him, at how he could barely keep his gleeful smile in check. Davian has always hated me; we had only been forced to get married because of his inheritance, and because I had urgently needed the money to fund my sister’s treatment.
I’d thought that we could learn to love each other, given time. Yet, here he was, throwing me away the first chance he got.
“How long?” I found myself asking.
A confused expression came over Davian’s face. “What do you mean?”
“How long have you been cheating on me? How long have you been sleeping with Agatha from behind my back?”
Agatha scoffed. “What do you mean cheating? Is it cheating if Davian never loved you in the first place?”
“Indeed,” Davian nodded with satisfied agreement, looking at the woman as if she was the love of his life while ignoring me. “This was nothing but a business proposal, and that business proposal has come to an end. Now, leave my office before I call security.
I could do nothing but comply. With trembling fingers, I signed the document, and returned it to him. He snatched it away from me and waved his hand, dismissing me as if I was a common servant.
“Now get lost.”
He turned and grabbed Agatha’s waist, and began kissing her right in front of me.
I walked out of the office to see everyone in the surrounding area staring at me.
“Serves her right,” one of them whispered loudly enough for me to hear.
“Did you know she fired Johnson last month? And the guy didn’t even do anything.”
“She’s always so full of herself, as if she can never do anything wrong.”
Their whispers and judging stares felt heavy and painful, as if I was nothing to any of them. Still, I gathered myself and walked past them, eager to leave the building.
As I got into the car, I broke down in tears. So this was how my marriage of one year was going to end.
I had always known it wasn’t real, we had only been married because of a contract, but I had hoped that by now Davian would grow to love me. Unfortunately, that was only a pipe dream.
I looked at myself in the rearview mirror, at my face stained with tears and make-up, and I frowned.
It was time to stop being so pathetic. I had dedicated too much of my life to Davian; it was time to reclaim that life back, to live the best way I could. Even if I didn’t have a job anymore, I could do something with the little money that I had saved.
That would be my revenge against Davian; to live the best life that I could.
As I was thinking, my phone suddenly chimed with a notification, drawing my attention. When I looked at the screen, I saw a message.
‘Father-In-Law: How is my Ginny doing? I’ve just arrived for a business trip, and I was wondering if you would meet me for dinner.’
As I stared at the message, my heart started beating, and an idea formed in my mind.
Maybe my revenge would be coming sooner than I thought.
