Chapter 13 At home as Trey trudged in the door, he paused and looked at the small dark brown puddle of dried blood at the base of the stairs. “I’ll clean that up in a bit,” said Karen. All of them had car-pooled back from the hospital in two cars: two men, two women, and two babies. Judging from something he overheard, Trey knew some of the hospital staff seemed to think they were two married couples and their kids. How weirdly traditional was that? It seemed like far too much trouble to try and explain the actual relationships. As Nina passed him, Trey put a hand on Nina’s arm. She stopped. He gingerly pulled her into his arms and whispered, “Thank you. Without what you did, we both might be dead.” She gave him a solemn look. “There was no way in hell I was going to let that happen.”
