Chapter 1-Betrayal's Love
Selene's POV
Waking up sore and disoriented, I slowly blink against the soft morning light spilling into my room. The warmth of the familiar space wraps around me like a cozy blanket, teasing my sleepy mind with memories of last night. I turned eighteen, officially becoming part of the pack. The excitement of starting my beta training bubbles inside me like a fresh spring brook. I take a deep breath, inhaling the comforting scent of pine and citrus—Marcus’s scent—as I reach for the pillow where he had slept.
Marcus. My lifelong friend, my partner in all things wild and adventurous. He’s more than just a friend; he’s my mate. We’ve spent countless hours pushing one another during grueling training sessions, our rivalry constantly tempered by an unbreakable bond. Even though he’s dating Marilyn, a flicker of hope ignites within me. I want to believe that he will honor our connection and embrace our destinies together. A wide smile spreads across my face when I think of the bright future ahead, filled with laughter and love.
But then the shadows creep in. Last year, my world shattered. I lost my parents when they sacrificed themselves for Alpha Ramos and Marcus during a rogue attack on Oak Fur. The pain of their loss felt unbearable, a heavy weight that I still carry. Grief has wrapped around my heart, refusing to let go. But as dawn breaks, I remind myself that becoming the future Luna of the pack means gaining a new family. I’m not alone; Alpha Ramos will be my father-in-law, and David and Miss Amelia will embrace me as their own, wrapping me in warmth and affection.
Yet, beneath this budding optimism, an unsettling absence gnaws at me. Where is Marcus? I glance at the side of the bed where he had been, but all that remains are his discarded t-shirt and boxer briefs, a reminder of his presence. I reach out through our mind link, my heart racing, but I hit an impenetrable wall. Confusion and concern swirl—a storm brewing inside me. Something feels horribly wrong. I try again, desperately pushing against the wall, but it holds firm, silencing my call to him.
I need to find Marcus and discuss the future that awaits us. Quickly, I slip into his clothes, their warmth clinging to me like an embrace. I rise from the bed, my mind racing with thoughts of him and what this could mean. Just as I’m about to step outside the room, the door swings open, and Marilyn storms in, flanked by her usual entourage of mean-spirited wolves.
“If it isn’t the little home-wrecker,” she sneers, stepping forward with a malicious gleam in her eye. My body tenses at her words, and a fire ignites within me. “Show some respect for your future Luna. I am Marcus’s mate,” I declare, relishing the stunned expression that flashes across her face.
Marilyn has loathed me since she joined the pack a decade ago; our disdain is an unyielding flame that burns brighter each day. She isn’t really a member of Oak Fur but the daughter of the Alpha of Blood Oath, the largest pack in the region. Since she began dating Marcus at fourteen, her bullying has only intensified.
“You will never be Luna of Oak Fur. That position is mine and mine alone!” she screeches, venom dripping from her words. Anger rises within me like a tidal wave, but just before I can respond, her minions close in with predatory grins.
The strawberry-blonde she-wolf, Pearl, lunges forward, grabbing my hair and yanking it hard, forcing me off-balance. I choke back a gasp, a wave of pain shooting through me as I catch the scent of wolfsbane on her fingers. A growl escapes my lips, a primal response to their threat. How dare they!
Fueled by adrenaline, I kick Pearl in the stomach. She stumbles backward, crashing into Marilyn, and for a brief moment, hope surges through me. But then claws rake across my back, igniting flames of pain as Ruby and Prism pounce. I can feel the cold, numbing agony from the wolfsbane in their nails, trying to drain away my strength.
Fighting through the haze of pain, I send out an S.O.S. into the pack link, but again, I hit that maddening block. Panic constricts my chest—only Alpha Ramos could be behind this. I brace for another attack, dodging Ruby’s next strike, but she grazes my shoulder, and I feel my energy falter, darkness creeping in.
Just when despair threatens to pull me under, a shout cuts through the chaos like a lifeline. Alpha Ramos stands in the doorway, his fierce grey eyes sweeping over the scene. Relief and fear intertwine, gripping my heart as I catch his gaze.
“Selene attacked Marilyn,” Ruby accuses, her voice emboldened by defiance.
A growl escapes my lips, ready to defend myself, but the alpha’s low growl halts me, freezing me in place. I feel the power radiating from him, an overwhelming force that compels me to submit. “I won’t tolerate anyone attacking a visiting pack delegate,” he snarls, stepping forward, his hand gripping my wrist with a ferocity that sends shivers through me.
His gaze grows distant, and as he drags me from Marcus’s room, the world blurs into a haze. The door slams shut behind him, and I’m propelled down the stairs, my heart thumping loudly in my chest. I stumble, barely regaining my balance, only to turn and glare at the alpha, the man my parents sacrificed themselves to protect.
Dread settles like a stone in my chest as I realize his glazed eyes hold the weight of a decision about to be revealed—a mind link calling the pack to gather. The future feels uncertain, a fog hanging heavily around me, and I can only hope that whatever happens next will bring me closer to Marcus again. I clutch onto that hope, wishing for clarity amidst the chaos. All I want is to find him, to make sense of everything, and to carve our path together.
