Fiona, a fierce war orphan raised in the mud of mercenary camps, serves as the proud Vanguard Commander of the Southern Lycan Pack. She is completely devoted to her commander and lover, Julian, who promises her a future as his mate on the eve of a massive battle against a rogue coalition. To "protect" her, Julian places a heavy obsidian amulet around her neck. However, the battle is a calculated trap. Julian orders his main force to retreat, leaving Fiona and her vanguard to be slaughtered. The amulet is actually a magic-dampener that locks away her latent, ancient primordial magic, rendering her defenseless. Julian traded her life to secure a political marriage and an alliance with a rival High Alpha. Left for dead and bleeding into the snow, Fiona vows a blood-oath of vengeance against the man she once loved.

Chapter 1: The Blood on the Snow
The wind howling through the jagged peaks of the Frost-Spire Mountains tasted of ozone, pine, and imminent death. Fiona stood at the edge of the rocky precipice, her dark leather armor dusted with a fine layer of fresh snow. Below her, the valley stretched out like a vast, frozen canvas, soon to be painted in shades of crimson. The fires of the enemy Rogue coalition flickered in the distance—a chaotic, pulsing grid of torches that mirrored the blood-lust humming in her own veins. She was no stranger to this chill. As an orphan of the Great Lycan-Mage War, her earliest memories weren't of a mother’s lullaby or the warm hearth of a packhouse. They were of screaming, the suffocating stench of burning flesh, and the biting cold of the wilderness where she had been left to die among the corpses of her village. The snow had been her shroud then; tonight, it was her armor. A pair of heavy, fur-lined arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, radiating chest. The familiar, intoxicating scent of cedar wood, spiced rum, and dominant Lycan pheromones flooded her senses. Julian. "You’re brooding again, my fierce little bird," Julian murmured, his voice a deep, gravelly purr against the shell of her ear. He pressed a warm, lingering kiss to the column of her neck, his sharp canine teeth scraping lightly over her sensitive skin, sending a violent shiver straight down her spine. Fiona leaned back into his strength, letting out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Julian was the Commander of the Southern Pack Vanguard, a rising star among the elite Lycan warriors, and the man who had pulled her from the mercenary mud years ago. He had given her a purpose. He had given her his bed, his affection, and the promise of a future where she would no longer be a nameless stray, but the mate of a future Alpha. "The wind is shifting, Julian," Fiona said, her voice steady despite the thrumming adrenaline in her chest. "The Rogues are positioning their spell-casters on the eastern ridge. If we don't breach their vanguard within the first twenty minutes, we'll be trapped in a bottleneck." Julian chuckled, a low, vibration that rattled against Fiona's back. He turned her around in his arms, his striking amber eyes locked onto her fierce, violet gaze. He reached up, his gloved thumb tracing the sharp line of her cheekbone, wiping away a stray snowflake. "Let me worry about the strategy, Fiona. You just focus on what you do best—cutting through their front lines like the beautiful wrath you are," he whispered, his eyes darkening with a sudden, burning heat. "Gods, you look magnificent when you’re craving blood. It drives me mad." Before she could reply, Julian’s mouth crashed down onto hers. The kiss was frantic, fueled by the volatile cocktail of pre-battle adrenaline and raw possession. Fiona gasped into his mouth, and Julian instantly seized the invitation, his tongue tangling with hers in a deep, demanding rhythm. He gripped her hips, lifting her slightly to press her thighs against his hard, armored groin. Fiona wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, desperate to lose herself in the fierce heat of his body before the cold reality of war took over. Julian groaned, backing her up until her spine met the rough bark of a nearby ancient pine. He yanked off his heavy tactical gloves, his bare hands sliding under the hem of her leather jerkin, seeking the bare, burning skin of her waist. His touch was rough, possessive, leaving searing trails of heat in the sub-zero temperature. "Julian, the troops... the horn could blow at any second," she breathed against his lips, though she was arching her back, her own body betraying her, craving the release only he could provide. "Let them wait," he growled, his pupils blown wide, completely swallowed by his inner beast. He dropped to his knees in the snow, his hands tearing at the lacings of her leather trousers. Fiona gripped the front of his armor to keep her balance as Julian parted her legs. The icy mountain air hit her exposed skin, making her gasp, but the shock was immediately incinerated as Julian’s warm, wet tongue slid over her aching center. Fiona cried out, the sound swallowed by the howling wind. He knew exactly how to ruin her, his tongue sweeping over her in heavy, deliberate strokes, while his thumbs worked the sensitive flesh of her thighs. She unraveled instantly, her fingers knotting into his thick, dark hair, pulling him fiercely against her as waves of intense pleasure crashed through her core. Her knees buckled, and Julian caught her weight, smiling against her slick skin before pressing one final, possessive kiss to her inner thigh. He stood up fluidly, his amber eyes gleaming with satisfaction as he adjusted his armor. Fiona, breathless and flushed, hurriedly laced her trousers back up, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Julian reached into his tunic and pulled out a heavy, silver chain. Dangling from it was a flawless, teardrop-shaped obsidian stone, pulsing with a faint, dark violet light. "Take this," Julian said softly, his expression turning uncharacteristically solemn as he slipped the chain over her head. The stone settled heavily against her collarbone, feeling strangely ice-cold against her skin. "It’s an ancient guardian amulet from my family’s vault. It will shield your magical aura from the Rogue mages tonight. I cannot lose you out there, Fiona. You are my vanguard. My future." Fiona touched the cold stone, a profound wave of emotion swelling in her chest. For a war orphan who had never owned anything, this piece of his legacy felt like a sacred vow. "I'll wear it proudly," she promised, her violet eyes shining with fierce loyalty. "I'll break their lines for you, Julian. I’ll clear your path to the throne." He smiled, a sharp, handsome smirk that didn't quite reach his eyes, though Fiona was too blinded by affection to notice. "I know you will, my fierce bird." From the center of the camp, the deep, echoing blast of a war horn shattered the night. The battle had begun. Julian slipped his gloves back on, his demeanor instantly shifting into the cold, calculating Commander. "Vanguard to the front! March!" he roared, his voice carrying over the wind. Fiona drew her twin silver-edged daggers, the blades catching the pale light of the moon. She gave Julian one last, determined nod before turning toward the steep descent into the valley. As she sprinted down the rocky slope ahead of the main army, the obsidian amulet bounced heavily against her chest, feeling heavier and colder with every step she took into the dark.
