Chapter 6

774 Words
Evie My mouth is so dry I feel like I just swallowed a whole beach's worth of sand and have been deprived of water for a month. I clutch the handle of my duffle bag and before I can ask anything my legs are moving as I run out of the door and down the hallway, duffle bag slung onto my back, barefoot. I need to find the door to leave. I move faster than I did when I ran from my own house, I come across a staircase, taking the steps two at a time as I run down to the foyer. I must get out, as I round the bottom of the staircase, I see a door and rush towards it, I can hear his footsteps upstairs plus at least two more pairs of feet. I pull open the door and rush out onto the front porch, being met with more stairs, I jump to the ground and take off into the woods. I duck behind a large tree, big enough to hide me from them. Looking up I try to decide if climbing or running is the better choice. Peeking around it ever so slightly to see if he followed me outside, I saw not one, but four figures heading to the tree line. This is not good at all, I sprint further into the woods, trying to avoid roots that are sticking up and rocks as I go, leaves crunching under my feet. They're going to hear me, no doubt about that, but if I can get far enough away and hide, I could be safe. Out of nowhere in the thickest suffocating darkness I have ever experienced, I hear a deep voice I don’t recognize shout, “RUN RABBIT, RUN.” How clever he’s quoting house of a thousand corpses. Jackass couldn’t come up with anything more original, how pathetic. God now I have to get away, who knows what these weirdos will do to me. Ducking and dodging anything in front of me, I pick up my pace, running further into the thick woods looking for anywhere I can hide when I hear a branch break to my right. SHIT! One of them caught up, slipping behind a large tree to my left, I held my breath hoping they would pass by me. Leaves crunch heading in the direction of where I am hiding, it sounds like two sets of feet now, great, two of them found me. I’ve never been very religious, but in this moment, I prayed that god would strike me down and end it all. I don’t know what they will do to me when they find me but I'm about to find out, the sounds of their footsteps are right up on me, I squeeze my eyes shut ready for the worst when I hear the one sound I did not expect, a dog growling. I peeked my eyes open, sank down to the ground, shushing the dog and trying to make peace with it before it gave me away. I slowly reach my hand out to let the dog smell me, it’s a pretty dog, some sort of large terrier I think from what I can see in the dark. It sniffs me and slowly gets closer to me. “I’m not going to hurt you just please be quite.” I whisper as I give it chin scratchies, it gets even closer to me, sniffing my face before giving me a few licks, its tail wagging. “Good dog.” I whisper my approval to it, just then I hear another booming voice, again not the blondes. “Meteor!” The dog looks in the direction of the voice. So that is its name, so odd to name your dog after something that could destroy the literal world, but okay. I give it a few more scratches before I hear it again and the dog takes off running. I slowly rise to my feet so as not to make any extra noise, and try to step as lightly as possible, they’re closer than before and I need to get moving. I make it past six more trees when I am stopped by a silhouette two trees away. Frozen, my heart is racing in my chest, I don’t know if it’s looking at me or away from me, I take a step back and it steps towards me. I take another and another until I'm backed into something hard, thinking it’s a tree trunk I try to sidestep only to have strong hands wrap around my upper arms. FUCK! They caught me!
