A love story
Scene: A quiet park bench near a bustling market. It’s late afternoon, and the air smells of jasmine and street food. Arjun, 19, who cannot speak, sits beside Meera, 18, who is blind. They’ve met a few times before at a community library where Meera listens to audiobooks and Arjun writes notes to the librarian. Today, Arjun has invited Meera to the park by slipping a folded note into her hand.Meera tilts her head, her fingers tracing the edge of the wooden bench. A soft breeze rustles her dupatta.Meera: (smiling) I can hear the kids playing near the fountain. Their laughter… it’s like music, isn’t it? Did you bring me here to listen to the world with you, Arjun?Arjun nods, then remembers she can’t see it. He gently taps her hand twice, their agreed signal for “yes.” His fingers linger for a moment before he pulls out his small notebook and scribbles quickly. He presses the note into her palm. Meera’s fingers brush over the paper, then she hands it back with a playful grin.Meera: You know I can’t read this. Come on, tell me another way. Like last time.Arjun hesitates, then reaches for her hand. He traces letters on her palm with his fingertip, slowly: “Y-O-U L-I-K-E S-O-U-N-D-S. I L-I-K-E S-I-G-H-T-S. T-O-G-E-T-H-E-R W-E A-R-E W-H-O-L-E.” His touch is careful, almost reverent.Meera’s cheeks flush as she feels each letter. She bites her lip, processing his words.Meera: (softly) That’s beautiful, Arjun. You see the world for me, don’t you? Like… what do you see right now? Paint it for me.Arjun takes her hand again, this time guiding it to mimic shapes in the air. He moves her fingers to trace the outline of a nearby banyan tree, its sprawling branches. Then he taps her wrist and draws a quick circle on her palm, pointing toward the sun setting behind the tree.Meera: (giggling) A big tree and… the sun? Oh, I can feel it on my face. Warm, like a hug. Is it orange today? Or pink?Arjun taps once for “yes,” then scribbles in his notebook, tearing out the page and folding it into her hand, knowing she’ll ask her sister to read it later. The note says: “Pink like your cheeks when you laugh.”Meera: (clutching the note) You’re sneaky with these notes. I’ll find out what this one says, you know. My sister’s getting curious about you. She says you’re too quiet for trouble, but I don’t believe her.Arjun lets out a silent laugh, his shoulders shaking. He claps his hands softly to show his amusement. A street vendor calls out, selling roasted peanuts, and Meera’s head turns toward the sound.Meera: Hmm, peanuts. My favorite. Bet you can’t resist them either, right?Arjun taps twice, then stands, pulling her up gently. He guides her toward the vendor, his hand steady on her elbow. As they walk, Meera hums a tune, and Arjun taps his foot to the rhythm, their steps falling into sync.At the vendor’s cart, Arjun buys a small paper cone of peanuts with his saved-up pocket money. He places it in Meera’s hands, and their fingers brush. She pops a peanut into her mouth, grinning.Meera: These taste like home. Like Diwali evenings with my family. What’s home like for you, Arjun? Do you… do you ever wish you could tell them everything?Arjun pauses, his eyes softening. He takes her hand and traces: “Y-O-U H-E-A-R M-E. T-H-A-T I-S E-N-O-U-G-H.”Meera’s smile falters, her voice thick with emotion.Meera: (whispering) You’re enough, too, Arjun. More than enough. They sit back on the bench, sharing the peanuts. The park grows quieter as the sun dips lower. Arjun rests his hand near hers, not touching but close enough to feel her warmth. Meera leans her head back, listening to the world, while Arjun watches her, his heart speaking words he’ll never say aloud
