CHAPTER 16
Travis arrived at work sporting a huge black eye and bruises on his face and neck.
'What happened to you?' Ned asked.
'Walked into a door, mate,' Travis said. But he grinned as he said it, as if it were a joke and Ned grinned back, as if he were in on the joke.
Benny felt a swell of pride that he had caused these injuries. And oddly, Travis wasn’t angry at him. In fact, it was the opposite—Travis was more respectful towards him and for the first time ever he worked an entire shift without making fun of Benny.
Mick was still absent, and Ned had called in Leon, one of the day workers, to do an extra shift. At tea break, Benny caught up with Travis. ‘When are you coming to get the bag?'
'Be patient, mate. Mick's in the clink. The cops picked him up on an old warrant, but the
