THE DEVIL'S CONSPIRACY Chapter 4: The Blood Debt Michael froze. Sarah's last words echoed through the tunnel. "It's coming." Something moved in the darkness behind them. Not footsteps. Breathing. Slow. Heavy. Patient. Michael turned toward the tunnel entrance. There was nothing there. Then Sarah grabbed his arm. “Don't look.” “Why?” “Because it wants you to see it.” Michael swallowed. “What wants me?” Sarah didn't answer. The darkness behind them suddenly became colder. Their breath appeared like smoke. Then came a sound. Three knocks. Knock. Knock. Knock. Michael's heart stopped. He knew those knocks. They were the same three knocks he had heard in his grandmother's house. His phone vibrated. He looked down. A new message had appeared. GRANDMOTHER: MICHAEL, IF YOU HEAR THREE KNOCKS, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. Michael stared at the screen. “She sent another message,” he whispered. Sarah's face changed. “Your grandmother?” Michael nodded. Sarah stepped backward. “That isn't possible.” “She's been dead for days.” “No.” Sarah shook her head. “You don't understand.” The phone vibrated again. GRANDMOTHER: I LIED TO YOU. Michael's blood ran cold. Another message appeared. I DIDN'T TRY TO SAVE YOU. A pause. Then: I CHOSE YOU. Michael looked at Sarah. “What does that mean?” Sarah's eyes filled with fear. “It means your grandmother wasn't protecting you.” The tunnel trembled. “She was preparing you.” A crack appeared across the stone wall. From inside the crack came a faint whisper. “Michael…” He recognized the voice immediately. His grandmother. “Michael, come home.” Sarah covered his mouth before he could answer. “Don't respond.” The whisper came again. “Michael…” This time, it sounded closer. Then another voice joined it. His mother's voice. “Michael, please.” He pulled away from Sarah. “My mother is alive.” Sarah stared at him. “Then why is she calling you from inside the wall?” Michael couldn't answer. The wall began to bleed. Dark liquid ran between the stones. Then a hand slowly pushed through. Sarah screamed. Michael stumbled backward. The hand was human. But its fingers were far too long. Something on the other side was trying to crawl through. Sarah grabbed Michael. “RUN!” They sprinted down the passage. Behind them, the wall cracked open. Something crawled into the tunnel. Michael didn't look back. But he could hear it. It was laughing. --- They reached a wooden door. Sarah slammed against it. Locked. “Open it!” “I can't!” Michael noticed a strange symbol carved into the wood. It looked like the symbol from his grandmother's diary. Beneath it were four words: A BLOODLINE MUST PAY. Michael remembered the diary. The blood opens. He pressed his palm against the symbol. Nothing happened. Sarah stared at him. “Your blood.” Michael pulled a small knife from his pocket. He cut his palm. Blood touched the symbol. The door opened instantly. A wave of freezing air struck them. They stepped inside. Michael expected another tunnel. Instead, they found a room. Hundreds of photographs covered the walls. Michael moved closer. Families. Children. Men and women. Some photographs looked decades old. Others looked much newer. Sarah whispered: “They're all connected to you.” Michael stared at the photographs. “Who are they?” “Your family.” He shook his head. “That can't be.” Sarah pointed toward the oldest photograph. “This is where the truth begins.” Michael picked it up. The photograph was dated 1954. His great-grandfather stood in front of the family house. Beside him was a group of five strangers. But one person caught Michael's attention. A tall man standing behind them. Pale face. Dark eyes. A smile that didn't look human. Malachar. Michael dropped the photograph. “He was there.” Sarah nodded. “He was there when the bargain was made.” Michael looked at the other photographs. Generation after generation. Every family member eventually appeared. And every photograph had the same dark figure somewhere in the background. Michael's stomach tightened. “Why didn't anyone tell me?” Sarah's voice became quiet. “Because nobody was supposed to know the whole truth.” “What truth?” She pointed toward the final photograph. It showed Michael. Taken only days ago. He was standing outside his grandmother's house. But Michael had never seen the photograph before. Someone had written beneath it: THE LAST DOORKEEPER. Michael's hands began shaking. “I'm not the sacrifice.” Sarah looked at him. “No.” She swallowed. “You're the key.” A loud sound came from behind them. BANG! The wooden door shook. Something was outside. BANG! The hinges began to bend. Michael looked at Sarah. “What happens if it gets inside?” Sarah's expression broke. “It doesn't kill you.” “Then what?” “It wears you.” Michael frowned. “What does that mean?” Sarah stepped closer. “It takes everything that makes you Michael.” Another bang. The door cracked. “Your memories.” BANG! “Your emotions.” Another crack appeared. “Your voice.” Michael backed away. “And then?” Sarah looked toward the door. “It becomes you.” Silence. Then the door slowly opened. No one stood outside. Michael stared into the darkness. Sarah whispered: “Don't move.” A figure stepped into the room. Michael's heart nearly stopped. It was him. Another Michael. Same face. Same clothes. Same scar on his hand. But his eyes were completely black. The creature smiled. Then it spoke in Michael's own voice. “Sarah…” Sarah began crying. The copy turned toward Michael. “You finally came home.” Michael couldn't move. The creature reached into its pocket. It pulled out the black key. Michael's eyes widened. “That key is mine.” The copy smiled. “No.” It raised the key. “It's ours.” Suddenly, Michael's phone rang. The screen showed one word: GRANDMOTHER. Sarah whispered: “Don't answer.” Michael stared at the phone. The call continued. Then the copy spoke. “Answer it.” Michael's finger moved toward the screen. The call stopped. For a moment, everything was silent. Then a message appeared. GRANDMOTHER: IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THE COPY HAS ALREADY REACHED YOU. Michael looked at the creature. Another message appeared. DO NOT TRUST SARAH. Sarah's face went pale. “What did it say?” Michael didn't answer. A final message appeared. THE GIRL BESIDE YOU DIED TWELVE YEARS AGO. Michael slowly looked at Sarah. She wasn't crying anymore. She was smiling. And behind her eyes, something ancient was waking up. Sarah whispered: “Now you know.” The lights went out. In the darkness, Michael heard two voices speak at exactly the same time. His grandmother's voice. And Sarah's.
