Chapter 21Inside the Briefing Room Sergeant Jacobs held the phone pressed to his ear. Having dialed Stevens' number, having waited as it rang on the other end, he already knew the answer. There would be no answer. Holding the transceiver down, he tried another number, Stevens' cell number—still nothing. He looked up at the wall clock. It was half past eleven. Three rooms away, Supervisor Harkin set a neatly-trimmed stack of papers at the edge of his desk, while leaving the larger mess of papers in the center.
