Chapter 1
On a continent called Puvi, there existed a tribe called Kullas. There also existed something else along with them, a black mist or, as they call it, "The Irul". This irul had no origin or, to be precise, no one could find its origin. It suddenly appears and sweeps inside any living body, takes control of it and kills any life it sees like a bloodthirsty monster going on a rampage until its satisfied. The Kullas suffered a lot. Many lost their family. At one point when they couldn't take it anymore, the tribal chief asked for five human sacrifices to make to the five Gods; Sei Youn, Inti, Varunan, Kottra and Rumal.
The chief wanted his people to fight this irul even if it meant losing a few. But who would want to give up their lives? Even if it means a day longer, anyone would want to live. So everyone comes up with reasons and excuses. Difference of opinion divided them. Some stayed, some left in search of places the irul hasn't reached. Out of those who stayed, five were chosen as sacrifices, one for each God. With the powers they got from the Gods, these five heroes, along with those who stayed back in the tribe to fight with the chief, charged straight into the irul, subdued it and at last sealed it somewhere in the Utavi mountain range. They used their life source as a bind to seal the irul.
For their bravery and selflessness, even to the point of giving up their reincarnation, the Gods blessed their followers with blood that allows them to heal quickly, age slowly, have great beauty, and a longer life than that of a normal human. Along with this, they also gave the five heroes a chance to become mountain deities of the Utavi range if they satisfy certain criteria and successfully pass three trials. They say that the rest of the Kullas changed their name to a name closer to god and live secluded near the mountains. Because of the heroes, these people were protected in a different realm within Puvi and their main aim became "becoming mountain deities". And they never leave the realm unless it's for their trails. Because the irul was sealed, the whole of Puvi became peaceful.
This is the story of the five legendary heroes who brought peace to us, the people who left the Kullas instead of fighting alongside them.
Enough grandma Eshw, every time you say this story, you make it sound like we are from a family of traitors. Also, it happened like a thousand years back. No one even knows when it actually happened or whether it even happened, said Athikan, frowning his face.
Little Banmai asked grandma, " are we Kullas?, grandma"
Yes Banmai, we are, said Grandma Eshw.
If you're going to answer it, then answer it clearly, said Madda. Banmai, listen to your father, we are descendants of Kullas. Not traitors but descendants. We don't belong to the Kulla tribe. What's our tribe's name, Banmai?!.....
Banmai said in a proud and clear voice,"Rinji"
Yes, Banmai, our tribe's name is Rinji. Kullas worshiped all five Gods, but we worship only Sei Youn. And we are also the only tribe out of the five tribes that has a strong barrier against the irul. Remember this, Banmai, we are descendants of Kullas, who are the most powerful and are proud of that.
