The incident
I woke up in my bed and slowly sat up rubbing my eyes before slowly pulling my covers off sliding my legs onto the cold floor board as, I slowly stand up walking over to my door before leaving my room I overhear my parents arguing “She’s 22 Laura there’s no need for you to protect her from the world anymore!” Said my dad “I know James but, what if she gets in trouble?” questioned my mother.
I didn’t want to know why they were arguing over me so early in the morning so I quietly opened my door tip toeing into the bathroom to brush my teeth and brush my hair after doing so I got changed into a pair of high waisted jeans and a oversized drop shoulder sweatshirt, I reach for the doorknob to exit the bathroom as I hear my dad knock on the door startling me.
“Emily your mother and I need to talk with you once you’re done” he stated as I took a deep breathe preparing myself before opening the door I walked over to meet my two parents in the living room I slowly sat on the sofa across from them.
I looked in my mothers eyes then my dads before asking “what is it you guys wanted to talk about?”, My dad replied with “Emily you haven’t gotten a job and it’s been three years now” I knew he was talking about the incident with my older sister “It’s time you get out there and act like an adult now.” Continued my father.
I stared at him in disbelief because, my parents have always said that I could stay here as long as I needed so I asked “I’m not allowed to try and get a job first to try and make money to live on?” “NO, you’ve had plenty of time to do so but, you’ve wasted time doing nothing instead of doing so!” My father snapped as I flinched from him yelling.
I calmly stood up and put on my grey sneakers my mom asks “what are you doing?” I looked at her and said “getting boxes to pack” my dad replied with “you’re not taking your stuff” I turned back and went in my room.
I grabbed my phone, my charger, and my wallet stuffing them in my purse as I walk out I hug my mom and dad “thanks anyways” I wandered down the street thinking what to do that’s when I realized that I needed to make money so I walked over to a nearby restaurant called ‘Rae’s Seafood Cuisine’ and I walked in and applied for the job there, I knew the owners son so she was aware of my situation and let me get the job as an opportunity to get my life together.
3 Years ago- The day of the Incident
I heard a knock on my window and I knew it was time, my sister and I planned on sneaking out and going to a party she was invited to. I sat up quietly in my bed in a black mini dress grabbing my matching pair of heels hidden under my bed opening my curtains to see my sister standing there impatiently with her hair curled and mini skirt on and a low cut shirt to match, I slowly slid open my window and carefully climbed out with my sisters help I stood outside closing my window leaving it open a crack before, I began walking with my sister out to our parents silver SUV.
I looked over at my sister “Hannah?” I asked, “what’s up?” She asked in reply not looking at me “did you get the keys?”, “yeah of course, I got the keys” she replied as she unlocked the car getting in unlocking it for me as well I got in as carefully as I could putting on my seatbelt before sliding on my heels.
She looked at me and giggled “still wearing a seatbelt like a rule abiding child?” I looked at her, “well yeah it makes me feel safer, why don’t you wear one sometime loser.” She laughed at me calling her a loser before turning the car on then we realized how loud it was and she switched off the lights and I could no longer see my sister who was next me.
I asked “who’s all going to be at the party?” She put the car into reverse trying to quietly pull out of our parents driveway as she started to reply “well your friend Amara..” she quickly got cut off by me screaming at the car coming from her side to which she wasn’t paying attention to because, she was looking at me.
A couple days later
I don’t remember anything that happened when the car hit just waking up in a hospital in a neck brace and my parents on my hospital bedside crying. I had tried to speak and ask what happened but, I was quickly hushed by the doctor to not speak because my neck was far too swollen to do so.
That’s when I wanted to do nothing except ask where my sister was but, my question was quickly answered by the doctor before I could stating that she hadn’t been as lucky as I was and that the car had hit it had hit the drivers side where my sister was, completely destroying it and barely doing anything to my side. I had sat there taking it in and feeling completely at fault for distracting my sister and calling her a loser I just laid there wanting to be alone.
