Chapter One: The Wedding Morning
The morning sun poured through the lace curtains like liquid gold, soft and pure. Amara stirred awake to the quiet hum of laughter and hurried footsteps outside her door. Her mother’s voice floated from the corridor, laced with excitement. “Hurry, girls! The bride mustn’t be late!” Amara sat up slowly, her heart fluttering like a trapped bird. For months she had imagined this day — walking down the aisle toward Daniel, the man whose love had become her safe place. Today, that dream was real. The scent of lilies, her favorite flowers, filled the room, mingling with the sweet perfume of powder and hair spray. Her bridesmaids bustled around her — adjusting the satin gown, fixing her veil, teasing her gently. “Mrs. Daniel Obinna,” one of them said with a grin. “You better start practicing your signature.” Amara laughed softly, though her chest ached with emotion. “Please, don’t make me cry,” she whispered. “I’ve held my tears in all morning.” Her best friend, Ada, knelt to buckle her shoes. “You deserve this joy, Ama. You’ve waited, prayed, and trusted. God really kept His promise.” Amara smiled. “He did.” The words lingered on her tongue, sacred and fragile. She had waited. She and Daniel had both chosen to honor God with their purity, even when it wasn’t easy. Their love had been slow, intentional, filled with prayers and boundaries. She’d dreamed of this night not as an end, but as a beginning — one that would finally let her love him completely. Her mother entered, radiant in a gold lace wrapper, her eyes already glistening. “My beautiful girl,” she said, cupping Amara’s face. “You look like a dream.” Amara’s throat tightened. “Thank you, Mama.” “Your father is already at the church,” her mother continued, smoothing her veil. “The guests have started arriving. You know everyone wants to see this wedding. The whole town adores you two.” Amara felt warmth fill her chest — pride, joy, a little nervousness. She rose from her chair to take one last look in the mirror. The reflection that stared back was serene, glowing. The gown fit perfectly, hugging her in all the right places. Her veil framed her face like mist. Then it happened. A dizzy spell hit her suddenly — a swirl of light and sound. She blinked, trying to steady herself, but her knees buckled. The room tilted, voices blurred, and then she collapsed. When she came to, the faces around her were pale with fear. Her mother was fanning her frantically. “Amara! Are you all right?” “I’m fine,” she murmured weakly. But her pulse raced in her ears. The family doctor, who had attended their family for years, was called in immediately. He entered with calm authority, carrying his small black bag. “Just a simple check, my dear,” he said gently, checking her pulse and pupils. After a few quiet minutes, he frowned slightly. “I’ll need to run a quick test,” he murmured, glancing at her mother. “Just precaution.” Amara sat in silence, her heart hammering. She could hear the faint toll of wedding bells from afar — a cruel reminder of the moment she was supposed to be living. The doctor stepped out for a moment, then returned, his expression unreadable. He hesitated. “Mrs. Nwosu,” he said softly to her mother. “We have… a situation.” Her mother stiffened. “What do you mean?” He swallowed, looking from her to Amara. “She’s pregnant.” The world went still. Her mother’s hand flew to her mouth. “That’s impossible!” she gasped. “Doctor, you must have made a mistake. My daughter—she’s a virgin!” Amara stared, her mind blank. Pregnant? Her throat went dry. “That can’t be true,” she whispered. “I’ve never been with anyone. Not Daniel, not anyone.” The doctor only sighed, murmuring, “I wish I could say otherwise.” Outside, a bridesmaid who had overheard fled the room. And before Amara could even breathe, the whispers had begun.
