Ever since the day Selena met Olivia’s brother, she grew restless. She just couldn’t understand why the moon goddess would do such a thing to her after all she had been through. She never thought her life would come to a point she had to reject her mate. She had never met someone who had done that. In her mind she always imagined those people to be the crazy lunatics. Now it was her. Was she crazy? It crushed her that she would have to do it. Before her life changed, she always had the idea she would meet her mate in her own pack so she wouldn’t even need to move away. Now she was without her pack on the other side of the planet planning to reject the moon goddess’ gift to her. If she really decided to go through with her plan, Selena knew she would end up alone and miserable for the rest of her life. But she had to protect herself and Elara, who seemed to look worse lately. More than ever, she seemed to get sick lately and was tired a lot of the time. Besides, Selena didn’t want to drag in another pack into her problems. Maybe they would even reject her, after finding out she was a rogue. Or worse, they would kill Selena and Elara. Olivia’s brother might rather be mate less than with a dirty rogue.
The whole weekend Selena stayed at home, either in bed or in front of the tv with ice cream and chips. Every now and then she would hang out on their porch. She already dreaded going back to school on Monday. But the day came, and Selena tried to avoid Olivia as best as she could, but by lunch time she failed. She sat alone at a table eating her fries, when suddenly noticed another tablet was placed in front of her. Olivia took a seat opposite her and face her with a pensive face.
“Why are you avoiding me? I messaged you and tried calling you.”
“I was busy. Sorry.” Selena faced her fries.
“I know what you are.” Olivia stared at her. She hoped Selena wouldn’t see through her bluff, and she didn’t.
She startled and looked into her eyes scared. Her mind was racing. It must be the spell which was wearing off. But could Olivia also smell she was a rogue? She had to play it cool.
“Yeah? What do you think I am?”
“Why don’t you tell me?” Olivia smiled. Selena ice-blue eyes stared at her, trying to figure out what she could possibly know.
“I know you are no human, like you tried to make everyone believe. I can clearly smell it now. Even more than on Friday in the car.” Olivia broke the silence.
“So, what am I then?” Selena couldn’t face her and started to play with her cold fries instead.
“Selena, I am not here to harm you. In fact, I’m trying to be your friend, but you make it pretty difficult. Will you tell me now why you are here as a werewolf?”
Selena’s head was racing. Olivia didn’t smell the rogue? She had to figure out a plan. If she wanted to reject Olivia’s brother, she had to tell it to him in person. That’s how it worked.
“Alright. I will tell you. But don’t make a big deal of it. My sister and I are basically here for an exchange year. Minus the exchange. Our pack has the tradition that young wolves go away from the pack for a year with a chaperone, and for our own safety in disguise. It’s our way to expand our education. That’s all. We are here for a year to learn about your culture and then we go back.” Selena stared at her hoping Olivia would buy her story. But Olivia didn’t say a word, didn’t even move her lips, she just kept looking at her.
“Alright.”
“Alright? That’s all?”
“Yes.” Olivia stared to grin. “This is amazing actually. At least I don’t have to pretend I’m human around you anymore. In fact, this is fantastic!” She started to laugh, Selena couldn’t help but to join in.
“Just let me mind-link the others, so they can join us.” Olivia looked absent for a second and Selena saw her friends already coming over.
“Guys, you would have never guessed it. She is one of us” All of them looked surprised and started talking all at once. They sat around Selena and Olivia and were as happy and cheerful as they could. Selena felt a bit guilty for her lie, she really started to like these people. But she had no choice.
“Selena, you have to tell us about the packs in Europe.”
“Leaving your pack for a while is dangerous. You’re pretty badass!”
“How did you hide your smell?”
Everyone talked at once, Selena didn’t know what to answer first. All four of them made themselves comfortable at the table, behaving like they were friends with Selena for ages. She couldn’t help but feel touched by this gesture. Nicolas and Jason were discussing the logistics of living an undercover wolf life in a foreign country and how much courage it took. Alexandra named countries to Anna where she would want to go to, while Anna was nodding and as usual kept her eyes on her phone.
“Guys, calm down.” Olivia made sure they all calmed down. She was definitely an Alpha’s daughter.
“We will have the whole year to ask Selena questions. But first – “Olivia took a theatrical break and glanced into all of their eyes before ending at Selena’s face with a suspicious smile. “I have to invite her to my birthday party!” They all joined in a blissful chatter, all of them agreeing that this was the best idea since sliced bread.
“As luck would have it, it’s this Saturday. Because I’m the birthday girl and turn 18 I also want to have a pyjama party for us girls on Friday night. It will be fun! You better say yes.”
Selena looked slightly intimidated and overwhelmed by everyone, who kept staring at her holding their breath, expecting an answer.
“If that is the case, you only turn 18 once and I just can’t refuse.”
All of them burst into a cheer that could have brought down the school building.
