Chapter 19 – The Anonymous Message

The morning after the sabotage investigation, an uneasy silence hung over Cole Developments.

Although work had resumed, conversations stopped whenever Sophia walked past. Some employees smiled reassuringly, while others quietly questioned whether she had truly been framed.

Sophia ignored the whispers and focused on her drawings.

She knew the only way to regain everyone's confidence was to keep doing her job.

Ethan called an emergency meeting with the company's senior managers.

"The police have confirmed that the access card used at the construction site was a cloned copy," he announced.

A wave of relief spread through the room.

"So Ms. Daniels is no longer a suspect?" one manager asked.

Ethan nodded.

"She never was."

The board members exchanged embarrassed glances.

One director cleared his throat.

"We owe her another apology."

"You do," Ethan replied firmly.

When the meeting ended, Sophia was standing outside the conference room.

"I heard everything," she said.

"I'm glad the truth is coming out."

Ethan smiled gently.

"It was always going to."

Before she could reply, his phone vibrated.

A new message had arrived from an unknown number.

Stay away from Sophia Daniels if you want to protect her.

Ethan frowned.

A second message followed immediately.

Next time, someone will get hurt.

His expression grew serious.

Sophia noticed.

"Is everything okay?"

He slipped the phone into his pocket.

"I'll handle it."

She looked unconvinced but didn't press him.

Later that afternoon, Ethan contacted the police and handed over the anonymous messages.

"The number is unregistered," the detective explained.

"We'll try to trace it, but whoever sent these knows how to hide their identity."

"Do you think it's connected to the sabotage?"

"It's very possible."

The detective paused.

"Until we know more, be careful."

Ethan thanked him and left.

For the first time in years, he wasn't worried about himself.

He was worried about Sophia.

That evening, Ethan insisted on driving Sophia home.

As they pulled up outside her apartment, she noticed he looked unusually quiet.

"You've hardly said a word."

"I'm thinking."

"About work?"

He hesitated.

"About keeping you safe."

Sophia looked at him in surprise.

"Ethan, I'm not in danger."

"I hope you're right."

She reached over and gently touched his hand.

"We'll get through this."

He looked into her eyes.

"I won't let anything happen to you."

Across the street, hidden behind a parked van, someone lifted a camera.

The shutter clicked several times as Ethan and Sophia talked in the car.

The photographer smiled before sending the pictures to an encrypted email address.

Within minutes, Vanessa Blake received them.

She studied the photographs with narrowed eyes.

"They're getting closer."

The man sitting across from her asked,

"What now?"

Vanessa placed the phone on the table.

"If fear won't separate them..."

She smiled coldly.

"...then I'll give them a reason to fear."

The room fell silent.

Outside, rain began to fall over London once again.

Neither Ethan nor Sophia realized that the anonymous messages were only the beginning.

Someone had already decided that the next attack would be far more personal.
