Chapter 1 : A New Beginning
When Hearts Collide
Chapter 1 – A New Beginning
The first rays of the morning sun stretched across London's skyline as Sophia Daniels stepped out of the taxi, clutching a leather portfolio tightly against her chest. Towering before her was the gleaming glass headquarters of Cole Developments, one of the most prestigious real estate companies in the country. Its polished exterior reflected the city around it, a symbol of ambition, wealth, and success.
Sophia took a deep breath.
"This is your chance," she whispered to herself.
After years of hard work, sleepless nights, and recovering from the heartbreak of a broken engagement, she had finally landed her dream job as an architect. It wasn't just another position—it was the fresh start she desperately needed.
Inside the lobby, employees hurried past in tailored suits, each focused on the day's work. The atmosphere buzzed with energy and professionalism. Sophia adjusted her blazer and approached the reception desk with a warm smile.
"Good morning. I'm Sophia Daniels, the new architect."
The receptionist smiled back. "Welcome to Cole Developments, Ms. Daniels. Human Resources is expecting you on the fifteenth floor."
A few minutes later, Sophia completed the orientation process and was introduced to her new colleagues. Most of them greeted her warmly, though she noticed everyone seemed unusually tense whenever the name of the company's CEO came up.
"Have you met Mr. Cole yet?" one employee asked.
Sophia shook her head.
The woman laughed softly. "Don't worry. Just remember to stay professional. He expects perfection."
Another employee added, "He rarely smiles."
Sophia raised an eyebrow. "Is he really that strict?"
"You'll find out soon enough."
Trying not to let the comments unsettle her, Sophia followed her supervisor through the spacious office. Her workstation overlooked the River Thames, offering a breathtaking view that instantly lifted her spirits.
"You'll be working on our newest luxury waterfront project," the supervisor explained. "It's the company's biggest investment this year."
Sophia's eyes lit up.
"This is exactly what I've dreamed of."
Just then, the office suddenly fell silent.
The clicking of polished shoes echoed through the hallway.
Everyone straightened immediately.
Sophia turned.
A tall man in a perfectly tailored black suit walked confidently into the room. His sharp jawline, piercing blue eyes, and calm expression commanded attention without a single word. He carried himself with quiet authority, and every employee stepped aside as he passed.
"That's Ethan Cole," someone whispered.
Without looking at anyone, Ethan continued toward the conference room.
Sophia, distracted by the whispers around her, accidentally dropped her portfolio. Architectural drawings scattered across the polished floor.
She quickly knelt to gather them.
At the same moment, Ethan stopped.
One of the drawings had landed near his polished shoes.
He bent down, picked it up, and studied it for a brief moment. His expression remained unreadable.
"You designed this?"
Sophia stood.
"Yes, sir."
He examined the sketch carefully.
"The structure is impressive," he said evenly. "But the foundation calculations are incomplete."
Sophia blinked in surprise.
"They're on the next page."
Without another word, Ethan handed the drawing back.
"Attention to detail matters."
Then he walked away.
The office remained silent until the conference room door closed behind him.
Sophia released the breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
"Well," one coworker whispered, "that went better than expected."
She frowned.
"Better?"
"He didn't fire you."
A nervous laugh escaped Sophia despite herself.
As she organized her desk later that afternoon, she couldn't stop thinking about the brief encounter. Ethan Cole was intimidating, but beneath his cold demeanor she had noticed something unexpected—a sharp eye for talent.
Across the building, Ethan stood in his office overlooking the city. Ryan Carter, his closest friend and business partner, entered carrying a stack of reports.
"You met the new architect?"
Ethan nodded.
"What do you think?"
He glanced once more at the sketch Sophia had drawn before placing it carefully on his desk.
"She's talented," he said quietly.
Ryan smiled.
"Interesting."
Ethan looked out at the London skyline.
"For now," he replied, "talent is all that matters."
Neither of them knew that meeting Sophia Daniels would become the moment that changed both of their lives forever.
