Chapter 2 – First Impressions

Sophia barely slept that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the cold, piercing gaze of Ethan Cole. He had spoken only a few words, yet those words echoed in her mind.

"Attention to detail matters."

She wasn't offended. If anything, she admired his honesty. Still, she hoped their paths wouldn't cross too often.

The next morning, she arrived at Cole Developments thirty minutes early. She wanted to make a good impression and familiarize herself with the luxury waterfront project before the day's meetings began.

As she settled at her desk, a cheerful voice interrupted her concentration.

"You must be Sophia."

She looked up to see a man in his early thirties wearing a friendly smile.

"I'm Ryan Carter."

Sophia stood and shook his hand.

"It's nice to meet you."

"I'm the company's Chief Operating Officer—and Ethan's business partner. Welcome to the team."

His warm personality immediately put her at ease.

"I've heard great things about your portfolio," Ryan continued. "Your designs are impressive."

"Thank you," Sophia replied. "I'm excited to be here."

Before Ryan could say anything else, an assistant hurried over.

"Mr. Carter, the executive meeting starts in five minutes."

Ryan nodded.

"Come with me, Sophia. You'll be joining us."

Her eyes widened.

"The executive meeting?"

"You'll be presenting your preliminary design ideas."

Sophia swallowed nervously.

"So soon?"

Ryan smiled.

"Ethan likes to see what new employees can do."

The executive conference room was sleek and modern, with a floor-to-ceiling view of London. Around the long table sat department heads, project managers, and senior architects.

Sophia quietly took a seat.

A moment later, the doors opened.

Ethan Cole entered.

The room instantly fell silent.

He acknowledged everyone with a brief nod before taking his place at the head of the table.

"Good morning," he said.

His voice was calm, steady, and authoritative.

"The waterfront project is our highest priority. Delays are unacceptable."

He glanced around the room before his eyes landed on Sophia.

"Ms. Daniels."

She straightened.

"You prepared new concepts?"

"Yes, sir."

"Present them."

Sophia connected her laptop to the large screen. Taking a deep breath, she began explaining her vision for the project—a modern waterfront complex with environmentally friendly materials, open green spaces, and elegant residential towers designed to blend with the surrounding landscape.

As she spoke, her nervousness faded. Architecture was her passion, and it showed.

When she finished, the room remained quiet.

Finally, one senior architect spoke.

"It's an ambitious design."

Another added, "The sustainability features could significantly reduce long-term costs."

Ryan smiled proudly.

Ethan remained expressionless.

He studied every slide one final time before asking a single question.

"Can the construction timeline remain within twelve months?"

Sophia answered confidently.

"If we phase the development correctly and coordinate suppliers early, yes."

Ethan held her gaze for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

"Good."

The single word surprised everyone.

It was the first time many employees had heard Ethan praise a new proposal so quickly.

The meeting continued, discussing budgets and schedules before finally ending.

As people filed out, Ryan leaned toward Sophia.

"Congratulations."

"For what?"

"You just impressed the hardest man in London."

Sophia laughed softly.

"I don't think he was impressed."

Ryan grinned.

"You'll learn that with Ethan, 'good' is the equivalent of a standing ovation."

Later that afternoon, Sophia was reviewing blueprints when she heard footsteps stop beside her desk.

She looked up.

Ethan.

Without a word, he placed a file in front of her.

"I've reassigned you."

She blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

"You'll work directly with me on the waterfront project."

Sophia's heart skipped.

"Directly... with you?"

"Yes."

He met her eyes.

"I don't tolerate carelessness. If you keep producing work of today's quality, we'll have no problems."

Before she could respond, he turned and walked away.

The office erupted into whispers.

"She'll be working with the CEO?"

"That never happens."

"She's either incredibly lucky... or incredibly brave."

Sophia looked down at the project file in front of her.

She had wanted an opportunity to prove herself.

She just hadn't expected it to come with the challenge of working side by side with the most intimidating man she'd ever met.

And neither she nor Ethan realized that this partnership was only the beginning of a journey that would change both of their lives forever.
