When Hearts Collide Chapter 9 – Hidden Wounds Monday morning arrived with clear skies, but inside Cole Developments the atmosphere was tense. The company had won another major investment, and everyone was working hard to prepare for the next phase of the Riverside Heights project. Sophia arrived early, carrying fresh design sketches. As she stepped into the architecture department, she noticed Ethan already standing by the large model of the development. "Good morning," she said. He looked up from the model. "Good morning." "I thought I was the first one here." "I've been here since six." Sophia smiled. "Do you ever take a break?" "Not often." She shook her head. "One day, work is going to complain that you're spending too much time with it." To her surprise, Ethan let out a quiet laugh. It wasn't loud, but it was genuine. Several employees passing by stopped in surprise. They had never heard their CEO laugh before. Later that afternoon, Ryan asked them to inspect a historic building that Cole Developments planned to renovate. The old mansion stood on the outskirts of London, surrounded by ancient oak trees. Though worn by time, it still carried an air of elegance. As Sophia walked through the empty halls, she ran her fingers gently along the carved wooden staircase. "It's beautiful," she whispered. "It was built over a century ago," Ethan replied. "My father loved this place." "You've been here before?" "Many times." His voice softened. "He wanted to restore it one day." Sophia looked at him. "What happened?" Ethan was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke quietly. "He passed away before he could." Sophia's expression filled with sympathy. "I'm so sorry." "He had a heart attack." There was no emotion in his voice, but she could see the pain in his eyes. "He taught me everything I know about business... and then one day he was just gone." Sophia didn't know what to say. Instead, she gently placed a hand on his arm. "I'm sure he'd be proud of what you've built." Ethan looked at her hand, then into her eyes. "Thank you." They continued exploring the mansion until they reached a sunlit balcony overlooking a peaceful garden. The silence between them felt comfortable. Finally, Ethan asked, "What about you?" She looked away. "My parents died in a car accident when I was nineteen." "I'm sorry." "My younger sister, Lily, was only fifteen." She smiled sadly. "I had to grow up very quickly." Ethan listened carefully. "I worked during the day and studied architecture at night. Some days I thought I'd never finish." "But you did." She nodded. "Because Lily believed in me even when I doubted myself." Ethan admired the quiet strength in her voice. "And Adrian?" he asked gently. Sophia stiffened. "He was my fiancé." "What happened?" She took a deep breath. "I discovered he was seeing someone else just two months before our wedding." Ethan's jaw tightened. "He betrayed your trust." "Yes." She forced a small smile. "It hurt... but it also taught me that love without honesty isn't love at all." For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then Ethan said quietly, "I understand." Sophia looked at him. "My ex-girlfriend didn't cheat on me," he continued. "But she stayed with me because of my family's wealth. When my company went through a difficult period, she walked away." Sophia frowned. "She left when things became difficult?" He nodded. "That's when I realized she loved the lifestyle... not me." Sophia felt a wave of sadness for him. "No wonder you've built walls around your heart." He gave her a thoughtful look. "Maybe." As they prepared to leave the mansion, rain began to fall lightly outside. Standing beneath the old stone archway, Sophia smiled. "It seems rain follows us everywhere." Ethan looked at her. "Maybe it's trying to tell us something." She laughed. "Like what?" "That storms don't last forever." For a brief moment, their eyes met. There was no awkwardness. No walls. Just two people who understood what it meant to lose someone they trusted. As they drove back to London, neither of them realized that sharing their deepest wounds had quietly brought their hearts closer than either of them had expected. End of Chapter 9
