When Hearts Collide Chapter 14 – The Almost Kiss The morning after the charity gala felt different. Sophia woke with a smile she couldn't hide. Every time she remembered the quiet moment she had shared with Ethan on the terrace, her heart fluttered. At Cole Developments, however, she reminded herself to stay professional. As she entered the office, she found Ethan already reviewing documents in the conference room. "Good morning," she said. Ethan looked up. For a brief second, the memory of the previous night flashed between them. "Good morning, Sophia." Neither of them mentioned the kiss. Instead, they focused on work. Ryan, who walked in moments later, looked from Ethan to Sophia and raised an eyebrow. "Why do I feel like I interrupted something?" "Nothing," they answered at the same time. Ryan laughed. "Right... nothing." The board had scheduled another meeting regarding the leaked project plans. The company's cybersecurity team reported that the leak had come from an external source using a fake email account. "There is no evidence that anyone on our staff intentionally leaked the files," the lead investigator explained. Sophia let out a quiet sigh of relief. Ethan looked at the board members. "I told you she had nothing to do with it." Some of the directors lowered their heads, embarrassed by their earlier suspicions. After the meeting ended, one of them approached Sophia. "I owe you an apology." She smiled politely. "Thank you." Later that afternoon, Ethan and Sophia visited the Riverside Heights site to review the next stage of construction. The workers greeted them warmly. As they walked through the gardens that were beginning to take shape, Sophia smiled. "It's finally starting to look like the sketches." "It is," Ethan agreed. "You were right about adding more green space." She looked at him playfully. "Does that count as another compliment?" "It does." She laughed. "I should write these down. They're rare." Ethan chuckled. "I'm getting more generous." As the sun began to set, they climbed to the rooftop of the tallest unfinished tower to inspect the panoramic viewing deck. The view of London was breathtaking. The city lights slowly flickered on beneath them. Sophia stepped closer to the edge, admiring the skyline. "It's beautiful." Ethan stood beside her. "It reminds me why we build." She turned toward him. "And why do you build?" He looked out over the city. "To create something that lasts." She smiled. "I think you're doing that." A gentle breeze swept across the rooftop. Without thinking, Ethan reached for her hand. She looked down, then intertwined her fingers with his. Neither of them spoke. The silence felt perfect. Slowly, Ethan leaned toward her. Sophia closed the distance between them. Just as their lips were about to meet— "Ethan!" Ryan's voice echoed across the rooftop. Both of them stepped apart immediately. Ryan hurried over, slightly out of breath. "I'm sorry to interrupt." Ethan sighed quietly. "What happened?" "We've got a problem." Ryan handed Ethan his phone. "It's Vanessa." On the screen was a photograph. It showed Ethan and Sophia dancing together at the charity gala, accompanied by an online headline: "Is London's Most Eligible Billionaire Dating His Employee?" The story had already begun spreading across social media. Sophia stared at the screen. "This could damage the company." Ethan's jaw tightened. "No." He locked the phone and looked directly at her. "It won't damage you." She looked into his eyes. "But it might damage your reputation." "I care more about protecting you than protecting gossip." Sophia felt her heart race again. For the first time, she realized Ethan wasn't just fighting for their project anymore. He was fighting for her. Far away, Vanessa sat in her apartment, scrolling through the growing number of comments online. She smiled to herself. "This is only the beginning." End of Chapter 14
