When Hearts Collide Chapter 25 – Truth in the Shadows The disappearance of Daniel Brooks dominated the headlines the next morning. News channels questioned how a key witness could vanish from a secure police operation. Reporters speculated about corruption, while social media was flooded with theories. At Cole Developments, the atmosphere was tense. Ryan switched off the television in the conference room. "This is becoming a circus." Ethan stood by the window, his expression unreadable. "It doesn't matter what the headlines say." Ryan looked at him. "What matters?" "Finding Daniel before someone else does." Sophia spent the morning trying to concentrate on work, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the previous night. She walked into Ethan's office carrying a folder. "I've revised the landscaping plans." Ethan accepted the file with a grateful smile. "You didn't have to come in today." "I needed something normal." He nodded. "So did I." For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Sophia said quietly, "We're going to get through this." Ethan looked at her with quiet admiration. "I believe you." Later that afternoon, Detective Whitmore arrived with unexpected news. "We found Daniel's phone." "Where?" Ryan asked. "In a rubbish bin near the railway station." "Any clues?" The detective placed the phone on the table. "It was badly damaged, but our forensic team recovered one voice recording." He pressed play. A frightened voice filled the room. "If anything happens to me... the woman with the silver necklace... she's the one giving the orders..." The recording ended abruptly. Sophia frowned. "A silver necklace?" Detective Whitmore nodded. "It's all we have." Ethan froze. He remembered something. Vanessa rarely appeared in public without the distinctive silver pendant her late mother had given her. He looked at Ryan. "You remember that necklace?" Ryan's eyes widened. "I do." Neither of them said Vanessa's name aloud. Not yet. That evening, Ethan and Sophia attended a fundraising dinner for one of the company's community projects. Security was tighter than ever. Even so, Ethan never let Sophia out of his sight. As they greeted guests, an elderly woman approached Sophia. "You must be the young architect everyone is talking about." Sophia smiled politely. "I hope for good reasons." The woman laughed. "I've watched you and Mr. Cole all evening." She glanced toward Ethan. "He looks at you the way my husband looked at me for fifty years." Sophia felt her cheeks warm. Across the room, Ethan caught her eye and smiled. Despite everything happening around them, that single smile reminded her why she was fighting so hard to protect their future. As the event ended, Ethan and Sophia walked toward the waiting car. The parking garage was unusually quiet. Too quiet. Ethan stopped. "Stay behind me." Sophia immediately sensed something was wrong. A shadow moved between two parked vehicles. Then another. Three masked men stepped into the open. One of them spoke. "Mr. Cole." "We only want the evidence." Ethan frowned. "What evidence?" "The recording." Realization hit him. Someone knew about Daniel's message. When Ethan didn't answer, one of the men rushed forward. Before he could reach them, security officers appeared from both ends of the garage. "Police! Don't move!" The attackers scattered in different directions. Two escaped through a stairwell. One was tackled to the ground. Within seconds, officers surrounded him. As they removed his mask, Detective Whitmore's face hardened. "I know this man." "So do I," Ryan said. The suspect had once worked as a driver for Vanessa Blake. The evidence against her was growing stronger. But as the suspect was placed into the police vehicle, he smiled strangely. "You'll never prove anything." He looked directly at Ethan. "You're already too late." Those words echoed in Ethan's mind as the convoy drove away. For the first time, he realized this conspiracy was much larger than one jealous ex-girlfriend. Someone powerful was helping Vanessa from behind the scenes. And whoever that person was... ...they still hadn't revealed themselves. End of Chapter 25
