Chapter 22 – The Price of Love

The next morning, Ethan and Sophia arrived together at Cole Developments under the watchful eyes of reporters gathered outside the building.

Camera flashes lit up the entrance.

"Mr. Cole!"

"Ms. Daniels!"

"Are the two of you living together?"

Neither of them answered.

Ethan simply placed a protective hand at the small of Sophia's back and guided her through the crowd.

Inside the lobby, employees pretended to focus on their work, but curious glances followed them all the way to the executive elevators.

Sophia sighed.

"I miss the days when no one knew my name."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"I understand."

"You do?"

"I've lived with public attention for years."

She looked at him.

"How do you ignore it?"

"I remind myself that people who truly know me don't judge me by headlines."

His words gave her comfort.

An emergency board meeting was called before noon.

The directors looked uneasy as Ethan and Ryan entered the conference room.

The chairman spoke first.

"The recent publicity has made some investors nervous."

Another director added, "A few major shareholders are worried the company's reputation could suffer."

Ethan remained calm.

"Our projects are on schedule, and our financial performance remains strong."

"That may be true," one board member replied, "but perception matters."

He slid a letter across the table.

"We've received an anonymous demand."

Ryan picked it up and read it aloud.

"If Ethan Cole continues his relationship with Sophia Daniels, Cole Developments will face more accidents, more leaks, and greater losses."

Silence filled the room.

The threat was clear.

The attacks were no longer aimed only at Sophia.

They were aimed at the company itself.

Outside the boardroom, Sophia waited anxiously.

When Ethan finally stepped out, she immediately knew something was wrong.

"What happened?"

He hesitated before handing her the letter.

She read it slowly.

Her face turned pale.

"They're using me to get to you."

"No," Ethan replied firmly.

"They're using fear."

Sophia lowered her eyes.

"What if they're right?"

He gently lifted her chin so she would look at him.

"They're not."

"But your company—"

"My company can recover from financial losses."

His voice softened.

"I couldn't recover from losing you."

Tears filled Sophia's eyes.

She wanted to believe him, but guilt weighed heavily on her heart.

Later that evening, Ryan found Ethan alone in his office.

"You look exhausted."

"I am."

Ryan closed the door.

"Have you considered increasing security again?"

"I already have."

"Then what's really bothering you?"

Ethan leaned back in his chair.

"They're trying to force a choice."

Ryan nodded.

"But you already know your answer."

Ethan looked out at the London skyline.

"I won't abandon Sophia."

Meanwhile, across the city, Vanessa met with the man who had helped arrange the sabotage.

"The board received the letter," he said.

"Good."

"And if Mr. Cole still refuses to walk away from her?"

Vanessa smiled coldly.

"Then we make the consequences impossible to ignore."

She picked up a photograph of Ethan and Sophia standing together outside the office.

"No matter how much they care about each other..."

"...everyone has a breaking point."

That night, Sophia stood alone on the balcony of Ethan's penthouse.

She stared at the city lights, deep in thought.

A moment later, Ethan joined her.

"You've been quiet."

She turned to face him.

"What if the safest thing for you... is for me to leave?"

The words hit Ethan like a punch.

He stepped closer.

"Don't ever say that."

"But if I'm the reason they're targeting you—"

He gently took both of her hands.

"Listen to me."

She met his eyes.

"I've spent years building buildings."

He smiled softly.

"But you've rebuilt my heart."

A tear slipped down Sophia's cheek.

Ethan wiped it away with his thumb.

"I'm not letting fear decide our future."

She nodded, finally allowing herself to lean into his embrace.

For a few peaceful moments, the world outside disappeared.

But hidden in the darkness across the street, someone watched them through the lens of a camera.

The anonymous enemy wasn't giving up.

And the next move would threaten far more than their love—it would test everything Ethan had spent his life building.
