When Hearts Collide Chapter 12 – The Charity Gala The evening of the charity gala arrived with London glowing beneath thousands of city lights. Luxury cars lined the entrance of the historic Grand Regent Ballroom as celebrities, business leaders, and philanthropists stepped onto the red carpet. Inside Cole Developments, the atmosphere was just as busy. Ryan adjusted his bow tie as he walked into Ethan's office. "You look nervous." Ethan looked up from fastening the cuff of his black tuxedo. "I have an important speech to give." Ryan smirked. "That's not what's making you nervous." Ethan gave him a questioning look. "It's your first public event with Sophia." Ethan sighed. "You imagine too much." Ryan chuckled. "We'll see." Sophia arrived a few minutes later in an elegant emerald-green evening gown. Her hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, and she wore only simple jewelry that highlighted her natural beauty. As she entered the ballroom foyer, conversations seemed to pause for a moment. Several guests admired her graceful appearance. Ethan turned just as she approached. For a brief second, he forgot everything around him. "You look..." He searched for the right word. "Incredible." A blush spread across Sophia's cheeks. "Thank you. You look very handsome yourself." Ryan cleared his throat dramatically. "If you two are finished complimenting each other, the photographers are waiting." They both laughed. The charity gala officially began with a welcome speech before dinner. Throughout the evening, Ethan and Sophia met donors, investors, and representatives from various charities. Sophia spoke passionately about creating buildings that improved communities instead of simply generating profit. Her sincerity impressed everyone she met. One elderly donor smiled at Ethan. "You've chosen an excellent partner for this project." Ethan glanced at Sophia before replying. "I couldn't agree more." Sophia smiled, but before she could respond, a familiar voice interrupted. "What a lovely evening." Vanessa Blake. She walked toward them wearing a stunning silver gown. "Ethan." He nodded politely. "Vanessa." She turned to Sophia. "Good evening." "Good evening." Vanessa smiled pleasantly, though her eyes remained cold. "I've heard everyone talking about you." Sophia answered calmly. "I hope they had nice things to say." "Oh, some did." Vanessa took a sip of champagne. "And some wondered whether business partners should spend quite so much time together." The comment hung in the air. Sophia kept her composure. "Our project requires teamwork." Ethan stepped forward. "And that's exactly what this is." Vanessa's smile faded for the briefest moment. She realized Ethan had defended Sophia without hesitation. After dinner, the host returned to the stage. "Tonight's charity auction has exceeded all expectations." The crowd applauded. "To celebrate, we'd like to invite everyone onto the dance floor." Soft music filled the ballroom. Ethan looked toward Sophia. "Would you like to dance?" She smiled. "I was hoping you'd ask." They stepped onto the dance floor together. Unlike their first dance, this one felt natural. Ethan rested one hand gently at her waist while Sophia placed hers on his shoulder. The world around them seemed to disappear. "You've become much more relaxed," Sophia whispered. "You bring that out in me." She looked into his blue eyes. "I'm glad." They continued dancing in comfortable silence. Across the room, Vanessa watched them with growing frustration. She had known Ethan for years. He had never looked at her the way he was looking at Sophia now. As the music ended, Ethan and Sophia walked onto the ballroom terrace for some fresh air. The cool evening breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers from the gardens below. "It's beautiful out here," Sophia said. "It is." She leaned lightly against the balcony railing. "I never imagined I'd enjoy events like this." "You handled yourself perfectly." She smiled. "Having you beside me helped." Ethan looked at her quietly. "You've changed this place." She frowned. "What do you mean?" "The office." "My life." Before Sophia could respond, fireworks suddenly burst across the London skyline, filling the night with brilliant colors. She looked up in amazement. "They're beautiful." Ethan wasn't watching the fireworks. He was watching her. For the first time in years, he realized he wasn't afraid of what he was feeling anymore. But just as he opened his mouth to speak, Ryan rushed onto the terrace. "Ethan!" Both of them turned. "You need to come inside." Ryan's expression was unusually serious. "There's a problem." The joyful evening was about to take an unexpected turn. End of Chapter 12
