*THE BOOK OF ELON MUSK: THE SECRET OF TECH*
_by Ilyasu H.S_
*Chapter 1: THE KID WHO READ ENCYCLOPEDIAS*
_ā¼2100 words_
*PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA. 1971-1988*
He wasnāt born rich.
He wasnāt born connected.
He was born curious. Dangerously curious.
*June 28, 1971.* Pretoria Hospital.
*Elon Reeve Musk* comes into the world.
His father: *Errol Musk* - an engineer, pilot, and property developer. Smart. Also harsh.
His mother: *Maye Musk* - a model and dietitian. Canadian. Tough. Beautiful. She taught him to work.
Elon had 2 siblings:
*Kimbal* - younger brother. Became a chef and entrepreneur.
*Tosca* - younger sister. Became a filmmaker.
Their house was full of books. And silence.
While other kids watched cartoons, Elon read the encyclopedia. Cover to cover.
Age 4.
"Why?" his mom asked.
"Because I want to know how everything works," he said.
*HOT: THE BULLYING THAT BUILT HIM*
School was hell.
Elon was the nerdy kid. Glasses. Quiet. Always with a book.
They called him names. Beat him up. Threw him down stairs.
He ended up in the hospital once. Broken ribs. Nose broken.
Most kids would quit.
Elon went home and read more.
Science fiction. Philosophy. How to build rockets.
He found his escape in computers.
Age 10: Got his first computer. A Commodore VIC-20.
Manual was 700 pages. He read it in 3 days.
Age 12: Taught himself programming.
And built a game.
*BLASTAR.* A space game.
Sold it to a computer magazine for *$500*.
His first tech money.
Thatās when he knew:
Computers donāt bully you.
Code does what you tell it to do.
*HISTORY LESSON #1: LEAVING HOME*
Age 17. 1989.
South Africa had mandatory military service. 2 years.
Elon didnāt want it.
So he left.
Alone. With $2000 borrowed from his father.
First: Canada. To get citizenship through his mom.
Worked on a farm. Chopped wood. Cleaned out grain bins.
Slept in a basement.
Then: University.
*Queenās University* in Canada for 2 years.
*University of Pennsylvania* in the US. 2 degrees.
Physics. And Economics.
Why both?
"I wanted to understand the universe, and how to change it."
*SWEET: THE FIRST FAILURE THAT MADE HIM*
*1995. Age 24. Silicon Valley.*
Elon and Kimbal started *Zip2*.
A company that put business directories online. "Yellow Pages for the internet."
They had no money.
Slept in the office. Shower at the YMCA.
Coded for 20 hours a day.
4 years later: *Compaq bought Zip2 for $307 Million*.
Elonās cut: *$22 Million*.
He was 28.
Most people would retire.
Elon said: "Letās build the future."
He took $12 Million and started *X.com*.
An online bank.
It merged with another company. Became *PayPal*.
*2002. eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 Billion.*
Elonās cut: *$165 Million*.
Age 31. Rich.
But he wasnāt done.
He was just getting started.
*THE SECRET OF TECH #1: RISK EVERYTHING*
Hereās what nobody tells you:
After PayPal, Elon didnāt buy islands.
He spent almost ALL his money on 2 impossible ideas.
*Idea 1: SpaceX* - "Rockets are too expensive. Weāll build our own."
*Idea 2: Tesla* - "Gas cars are dying. Weāll build electric."
His friends told him he was crazy.
"Youāll lose everything."
He did it anyway.
*THE CRASH YEARS: 2006-2008*
This is the part they skip in the headlines.
*SpaceX:* First 3 rockets. All exploded.
$100 Million gone.
NASA said no. Engineers quit.
*Tesla:* Almost bankrupt.
2008 financial crisis. No one was buying $100k electric cars.
Elon put his last $40 Million into Tesla to keep it alive.
Christmas Eve, 2008.
He had $0 in the bank.
Borrowed money from friends for rent.
Then 2 miracles in 1 week:
1. *SpaceX:* 4th rocket launch. Success. NASA gave them a $1.6 Billion contract.
2. *Tesla:* Got a $50 Million investment. Survived.
That week, Elon went from broke to not-broke.
That week made him.
*END OF CHAPTER 1*
*CALIFORNIA. 2021.*
The kid who got beaten up in Pretoria.
The kid who slept in his office.
The kid who almost lost everything...
Is now on stage.
*"I am now the richest person in the world."* - Forbes
Net worth: *$300+ Billion*.
Companies: SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, The Boring Company, X.
But he still sleeps 6 hours.
Still answers emails himself.
Still reads.
Because the secret started here:
*In a library. With an encyclopedia. At age 4.*
---
*THE PLAYBOOK: CHAPTER 1*
*What Elon Did:* Taught himself. Took huge risks. Worked 100-hour weeks.
*Why It Worked:* He wasnāt chasing money. He was chasing problems worth solving.
*How YOU Can Use It:*
1. *Be autodidactic* - Learn what school wonāt teach you
2. *Pick hard problems* - If itās easy, 1000 people are doing it
3. *Reinvest in the mission* - Donāt spend. Build.
