She has changed...

714 Words
I finished telling her my story. She was listening to me with curiosity in her eyes. “Wow. It feels like a movie sis.. And you made the first move? As expected of you.” She laughed. She sipped her coffee and then for a moment there, I saw something change in her expression. I couldn’t define what it was. But it lasted for only a few moments. Then she was back to her old self. “Tell me about you April. Did you know I came searching for you in London?” “Yes I know. My friend told me. My life was nothing special these eight years. The same routine over and over. I had a few friends. They helped me through my tough times. I got my degree, licence to practice, and then got my job in the firm I’m working now. Life had been busy. And in the midst… “ She trailed off.. “In the midst?” “Nah. Nothing. I was saying that I didn’t get to enjoy a normal time.” “What do you mean by normal?" She looked at me. There was that instantaneous expression change again. “Oh… you know the normal stuff like getting a boyfriend, getting married and all that. I had.. other things.” “Things?” “C’mon sis. What are you? Some kind of detective. I feel like I’m being questioned for a murder now.” I laughed and she joined me. I popped another joke at her. “Are you felling like it cause you are going to murder someone?” “Not exactly... If there is a murder, it won’t be me who committed it. Don’t you think so sis?” “Then who else? Me?” Even though I kept laughing, I felt the atmosphere suddenly tense up. “Well… Who knows?” This time I saw the expression on her face clearly. What was it? My mind couldn’t capture it quickly enough to identify it. Why did I feel like she was hiding something from me? Her tone felt like that. On a second note, my sister has changed. She was more cheerful. Yes. But her talks were more cunning. Talking with her, I found out a change in her character. Was it even my sister I’m talking to? Who is this stranger? While I was arguing with myself, she looked at her watch. “Will you look at the time? Wow… Is this why they say that time flies?” I noticed that we had indeed spoken for the whole afternoon. “Well sis, I gotta get going. Lots of things to unpack and set up. I’ll be seeing you around.” “Yea sure April. Don’t forget to visit me when you are free. I’ll introduce you to Max.” “Yea I’ll call you.” She stood up, took her bag and turned towards the door. “Wait. I forgot to ask. How did you get my number?” She turned back and looked at me as if I’m crazy. “You left it with my friend. Remember?” It hadn’t crossed my mind till now. Of course I left the number in case she decided to give me a call suddenly. We told our byes to each other and left the place. I made my way back home. The evening traffic was heavy. My car moved in slow motion. Well, I have all the time to let my mind wander as usual. So that’s what I did. I was thinking deeply about what kind of expression she wore in the middle of our convo. After rewinding through the entire conversation again and again, I suddenly understood it. It was coldness. Her eyes gave off a cold look. More calculative and sort of evil… A shiver ran through my spine. The traffic had started to move. People were furiously honking behind me. I started the car and moved along the traffic. Realisation hit me like a hammer. The sister that I had met after eight years, was not my sister anymore. What I saw in those red eyes was something more than I could infer. They glowed like fire, ready to engulf anything in its way… ****************** Hello readers, It's me Scarlett. How are you guys doing? Are you enjoying the novel?
