Prologue
Every place has a story... A story that is just waiting for you to listen or just for you to read about... This one is finally ready to come to light of the day and ready to be told, so listen closely and carefully, cause I'm not planning to repeat myself... It all started a long time ago, far sooner than the first people walked the earth... before humans, there was another race, also known as Fey, a fairy warriors group with mixed origins from Angels and Demons. Yes, they existed too... or are they still between us? Overlooking our decisions and choices, the steps we take as our lives go on... But back to the story... Nothing is perfect, and nothing is really evil. That is something we need to remember. Why? Because it leads us to the day, I will always carry in my mind... One day, a boy washed up on the shores of our home. It was long before I was born, but every hatchling was told. He was young, barely in his twenties, with no memory of his past, just a lost HUMAN boy. We were a peaceful clan, we believed in a lot of things, but that was our downfall. We welcomed him in, even with some mistrust, and showed him the Word in ways that were reserved for our eyes only. Told him our lighter secrets and taugh him our ways... we believed in so-called Karma, as you, Humans would say. At first, he was a little wary, but who wouldn't if they suddenly turned up on an Island surrounded by people with pointy ears, a set of fangs (even though smaller than those of the vampire race), and some of them had wings! But the boy was young, with an open mind. He quickly adapted and even made some inventions for us to have easier lives. So there was no reason for our people to think anything bad. Now you might be asking, how did it turn so bad? What happened? Why is there a reason for this story to be told (read) if everything was okay? Let me tell you, hatchlings! Boy, at the time, turned into a man, and learned something he was never supposed to find out... you see, when Fey "outgrow" their wings, they tear them off so a new set can form. The wings are then put on the ground in front of our Sacred Tree as a symbol of loyalty to Mother Nature (our one and only goodness), all while saying or singing a small prayer in our language to protect our hatchlings and let our elders rest in peace. If our offering is accepted, the wings on our back glow slightly with magic and the pair on the ground turn into "fairy dust"... for us, fairy dust was used to heal nature and sometimes animals, but for the boy, he saw opportunities of growing rich with what they call money, or golden coins. He started to collect the dust in leather bags and hide them in the ship we gave him to return to his home... and when the time came for him to go, he went. No one truly knows what happened in the world of Humans, but I believe he sold the dust to rich people who wanted to prolong their lives, and when he started to run out of fairy dust, he came back. It started as small visits from him under a claim of our people becoming his "family", but he always came back changed... his clothes were from the finest materials, he favored to "bath" himself in gold jewelry and his ship, that first docked on the beach started to stay further from our home... But then it came! Nature spoke in only the way it could; the once-green trees started to lose their colors. The once big grounds perfect for farming started to produce fewer and fewer vegetables and fruit... the woods, once full of life, became more silent, and there weren't as many pups, kids, and others young as there used to be. All in all, it became harder for us to live and provide for our families. When he came the next time, we questioned him. Asked about his visits, his changed appearance... why does his ship never visit docks, yet it always seems so well taken care of? Instead of answering our reasonable questions, he got angry... lost his well-crafted mask of a person we knew, and started blaming us for not providing enough dust, for not giving him what he WANTED, the ONLY thing we (monsters and freaks) were useful for. He showed his true colors, hit us where it hurt the most and he knew it. While we were speeches, other Humas he brought attacked us. They took everything that had any value in their eyes, and when it was not enough... when they didn't find any fairy dust, they started to CUT OFF YOUR WINGS! Never were we betrayed like that! The boy, that monster who fell in love with gold and fame, cared more for a few more shiny coins to hold in the vault than he cared about the people who saved, healed, and took care of him for years! And that's when my story begins... The boy came before I was born and my parents were always wary of him and his curiosity. Maybe it was just distrust, or maybe it was our family blessing from Goodness Nature, that we always prayed to... Our job was always the same, moved from generation to the next: Protect the World from monsters that lure under their "beds". For that, we were always observing from a distance type of family. One that was always in the background. But also the one, no one really listened to... So when the attack happened, I was only five at the time, and my parents took action. They fought bravely and saved most of our kind, but the future didn't look bright cause we all knew HE would never leave us alone... so we prepared, and when the time came, we acted. During one of his "visits" we were in front of our Sacred Tree, evacuating our home into the realm given to my family by Gods for a price... Cause the portal to the realm could be opened only by one of our own, someone needed to stay behind and guard. While they were leaving, that chosen Fey warrior was waiting in another part... their job was to unleash the monsters my family guarded in the Underworld for generations, and when the last of our people were gone, that's when they let them loose. Now you might ask, what does it have to do with me? I was the one, they left behind. Not because they stopped loving me, but because I was the youngest of my family and both portals, gates, whatever you want to call them, need to be opened with the blood of Godly blessed bloodline, willingly given... I might be young, but I was trained more than most of our people. I never felt envy or anger towards any of them, and I will probably never feel these emotions because they did what they thought was the best option for saving as many lives as possible. And even though I understand and agree... now at the age of "sweet sixteen" all I feel is lonely. My friends? Animals that were strong or smart enough to fight monsters. My job? Making sure the monsters don't destroy the whole World as we know it... That means praying to Mother Nature and offering offerings to Gods of no name to keep the barrier that keeps monsters on this Island always. And sometimes, when all is done, and there is nothing to actually do, I spend my time looking at the night sky and whispering my hopes of letting my family and people come home... My name is Laya, and this is the beginning of MY story. PS: SORRY IF THIS CHAPTER DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE; IT'S MORE TO TELL THE STORY WITH MY INPUT.
