The morning of the ribbon test felt like a held breath. Everyone moved in group, their voices low and nervous. Outdoor tests wasn’t exactly outdated, but for this school, it was. I tried to act calm and quiet like everyone else, but my chest wouldn’t stop banging.

Jason’s instructions had been clear:
“You are to be in pairs only. No switching and no receiving help from outsiders. You are to search the bush along the Ember pack border in human form and return with one blue ribbon — nothing else! Remember, in your human form! If you shift, you’re out!”
