KILO
Pulling up to Toot’s crib, I sit contemplating on rather I should take back Boyle Heights, knowing I need the money. Sitting in the car, I text Toot to come outside, then my cousin Nico to see where the Go gang is posted up. Noticing Toot come out, I place my phone face down on the dashboard as he gets in.
“What up?” He asks as he slams the passenger side door.
“I’m bout to take my city back. That’s what’s up. I said as I grab my phone as it goes off. But I can’t do it without you, my spider, my right-hand man.” I said dramatically, throwing up my fours.
“Already, I gotcha. But what happened to all that legit talk from earlier?”
“Toot, I got to level up. See, what I figured is that the people that come in with no goal to quit are the ones that end up dead are in jail. But I do. I texted my cousin Nico to find out where the Go Gang posted up, and he just texted back, so let me see what he talking about. I said, opening up the text. He says the Go Gang posted up in the alley behind that Arab store off East first street. After letting him know what the text said, I crank up and ask Toot what he wanna do. He takes out his nine and c***s it, indicating he’s down with me. Cool, we gone head that way. I just need to text Sean and let him know I’m on my way to get him.”
“Really, you know how Sean is. He shoots now and talks later. We don’t need that. That motherfucker gone in the head, if you ask me.” Toot furiously says as I’m backing out of the driveway.
“Toot shut up. You don’t like him because he whooped your ass twice when I was locked up. I giggle, plus that’s what I need, and I hope when s**t gets real, you pull that b***h out and bust it too.” I said suspiciously, knowing I’ve never seen Toot shoot nor heard of him shooting.
“He must have told you that?“
“Nawl, I said, taking my eyes off the road for a second. Sean is over that bullshit, and you need to be too. Five minutes of silence went by as I pull on to Whittier street. Pulling up to Sean’s crib, I look over to Toot as he has his lips poked out with his arms folded, mad as hell. Look, I need both of yawl, and you need to chill.” I say as I slightly shove him with my elbow as I put the car in park. He unfolds his arms and exhales.
“I just don’t see why you're f*****g with him, but forget it.” He says, throwing up his hands. Blowing the horn to my cousin Nico, standing in his yard on the phone across the street, I notice Sean coming out of his crib with a long trench coat on so I quickly tap Toot and tell him to chill as he continue to trash talk about.
“See, that’s the goofy s**t I’m talking about. Dude is coming out with a trench coat on. Toot chuckles. You might as well shoot me now cause Sean is drawing too much attention to us-”
“Toot chill, Mann.” I said aggressively, grabbing his arm as I cut him off from saying anything as Sean got closer to the car.
“What up, Mann,” I said, letting go of Toot’s arm as Sean opened the door behind me, looking around outside to make sure no one sees him as he takes out his rifle bag and placed it on the floor in the back behind Toot.
“What up, slugger?” He says, slightly pushing Toot in the back of his head, laughing as he adjusted the rifle bag to stand straight up behind Toot’s seat. Sean gets out of the car and asked me to pop the trunk, so I did. After Sean puts his coat in the trunk, he closes it and gets in. Cranking up and backing into his Nabors driveway, I notice Sean slumped over to the middle of the backseat propped on his arm, staring out the window behind me.
“Say Sean pay Toot no attention. He just in his feels right now. I said, pulling Toot’s cap down in his face while creeping up the street. He slaps my hand and looks at me as if he wanted to whoop my ass. Alight, Mann damn, I was just playing.”
“That’s your damn problem now. You always playing.” Toot says as Sean’s killing himself laughing.
“Whateva, look, we bout to ride over here to this alley.”
“What alley?” Sean asks.
“Over here off East First.”
“Oh, behind the store?”
“Yeah, we bout to let them motherfuckers know we back to take all our s**t back.”
“Hell yeah, but ahh. I think you should know that I was f*****g with the Go Gang for a little while since they locked you up. Sean stutters as I look into the rearview mirror with a puzzled look on my face, noticing the rifle bag standing straight up between Sean’s legs. But look, you can use me to bate them in to tell me where Big E is, then the rest is all yours.” Although he sounds eager to take back the city, I can’t help but feel betrayed but curious about how this is going to play out.
“Let’s do that, but who’s Big E?”
“Damn, your boy Toot didn’t give you the rundown?” Sean says as he while patting Toot on his upper left arm. Anyway, Big E is Eric Thomas.
“Eric Thomas, the linebacker from high school?” I ask curiously.
“Yeah, and he was running s**t for the past eight years now. Word on the street is that Kandi is the one that helped him come up.”
“Huh, it seems like this Kandi chick got her hands in a lot of pots around here. I said, confusingly turning onto East first. Tell me more about this Kandi chick and how the hell she helped him come up.”
“Kandi and her goons came here from Louisiana and extorted all of Santa Monica Beach, Sean says dramatically. Word is she linked up with this chick they call T.K. that knew some big timers in Boyle Heights and from their they been what’s pop-in.”
“I knew when I dropped Kiesha off, that area seemed familiar.”
“Dude Imma tell you like this, don’t go getting involved with Kandi Land Kilo. People disappeared after going to that place, Mann, for real.” Toot says, spooked out.
“Don’t listen to his scary-ass, Sean says. Kandi land is a counseling center, with a lot of s**t dealing with rehabilitation and a club on the back.”
“See, Mann, that’s why I f**k with you. See how Sean thank ahead.” I stated as I pat Toot after dapping Sean up.
“Yeah,” Toot says, taking his gun from his waistline, c*****g it, then kisses it while looking at Sean before placing it in his lap. Shaking my head, glancing in the back at Sean as he startles me as he unzips his rifle bag. I repeatedly look to the driver and passenger side rearview mirror, hoping that a cop didn’t see me swerve in the middle of the road. Turning off of East first, Sean c***s his wooden rifle.
“The alley right up there past the blue house. Sean says, pointing from the middle of the seats after squeezing himself between them. Stop right here, he says. Putting the car in park at the turn-in of the alley, I see five men posed up. Say let me see your gun he asks,” pulling Toot’s arm as he snatched away while staring out the front window. I tap Toot with my elbow before he snatched his head to look at me.
“Hell nawl, let him use yours, Kilo.”
“He asked you, man.” I said, disgusted with Toot’s childish actions. Sean reaches across the seats and aggressively snatches the gun from Toot, and gets out. Watching Sean stuff the Glock behind him in his pants as he walks over to two men on the opposite side of the alley. After waiting for twenty minutes, Sean walks back to the car with a goofy-looking Jamaican dude with a smirk. I get paranoid, so I take my gun out of the armrest and place it on my lap. Sean and the Jamaican sot on the hood of my car and talked for a few minutes before dapping each other up and go their separate way.
“Alright, I’ll see yawl real soon.” Sean says, opening the door of the car and quickly draws his gun. I crank up as I watch everybody scattered like roaches.
“You crazy I said as he got in and quickly closes the door, ducking in case someone shots. He pushes the gun into Toot’s chest, trying to give it back, but he didn’t grab it so it falls in his lap and then to the floor. See, that’s how mistakes happen.” Sean says as he and I laugh. Toot sighs as he hits his head on the dashboard, trying to pick the gun up as I speed out of the alley.
“Say, Kilo, this is what I found out. Big E and Kandi run together. Big E is Kandi’s supplier, and Kandi is Big E’s smuggler.”
“Kandi, the b***h that owns the club and s**t, okay?”
“Yeah, and everything on Kandi Land if you want anyone that f***s off there, you got to go thru her.”
“Alright, but where’s Big E?” I ask, amused by the information.
“Ahh he stutters. He’ll be over by the store on eighth-”
“Mann, you know how many stores up and down eighty?” Toot says as he turns around and looks Sean in the face.
“f**k you; Sean says, sarcastically mushing Toot in the face. The little dude said something about Ponchos, are some shit.”
“Sean, you were supposed to get info about where the motherfucker is. And that’s all you can give me?” I asked, looking in the rearview at him.
“My bad, Mann, but he was high as hell on that mojo, and I couldn’t understand what the dude was saying. f**k, that’s why I got in as I did, but I know Big E ass be at Ponchos, that Mexican restaurant on eighth street cause that’s one spot he collects from.”
“Whatever we bout to go find out. I said, turning on fourth street. Contemplating if I should trust Sean due to he didn’t get the information we came for. Knowing that he was working for him till today, he might try to take me out. Sean, I say out loud, startling everyone as I come up to a restaurant that I think is Ponchos.”
“What up-“
“Is that the building with all the lights?”
“Yea, that’s it, He reply. Where are you going, Kilo? It’s on the other side of the tracks.” Sean says dramatically, looking back at the restaurant.
“Shut up, I frustratedly say. We gone sit here, so when we go in, they won’t see us coming are going. Putting the car in park after turning the car around on this deserted wooded road, I look around, scoping out the parameter. I take my gun off my side and c**k it and placed it on top of the armrest. I look back to Sean to see the reaction on his face, and it seems as if he’s more ready than I am. Hold on I said to Toot as he opens the door. Sean, did you see Big E’s car anywhere?”
“Hell, yeah, that’s his black Tahoe under the tree next to the restaurant, and he usually has about ten to fifteen people with him.”
“So basically, all that’s gone be in there is the Go Gang?”
“Pretty much,” Sean says sarcastically.
“Cool, ready?” I ask nervously.
“Hell yeah, been.” Toot says, getting out. We all get out and kneel and walk around to the trunk of the car so that Sean can put on his trench coat, but just as Sean does, Toot notices a black hoodie in the trunk that he can fit and puts it on. Sean tiptoes around the vehicle to the door he left open and grabs his rifle before we crossed the tracks out of the woods.
“Follow me, Toot. Sean, fall back with the rifle.” I whisper as we make it a little past the restaurant on the other side of the street so that no one would see us in the restaurant’s doorway. Finally, crossing the road with our guns aimed as we come from the restaurant’s side. I look back to Sean, six feet behind us with his rifle aimed and ready as I swing open the door. With Toot following me inside, I put the gun on my waist as we slowly enter. Scoping out everything as I stand in the doorway for five minutes, no one comes to the front register. I look outside the glass window and noticing Sean standing outside the door putting the rifle in his trich coat. Walking further into the restaurant, I look around and finally spot Big E at a table with five other dudes. I walk over to Toot as he’s flirting with one of the waitress in the front. I pull him by the arm and point over to where they are. Getting closer to where they are, I look back to the front door and notice Sean pointing over to the table where Big E is. I nod my head to let him know I know as I place both of my hands in my pants pockets.
“Look,” one of the Go Gang members says, sitting next to Big E as Toot and I slowly approach the table.
“Look who it is, Kilo, the king of Boyle Heights. At least it once was. Big E says, laughing along with his boys. Standing behind the man on the other end of the table from Big E, I just stand looking at him under-eyed. How can I help you Kilo and powder?” He says, pairing powder to Toot. Most people at the table nodded and said yeah as some reaches below their waist as Big E tries to get up. Toot Quickly pulls his gun out of his hoodie pocket out of emotion, just as I thought he would. I do the same and rush one of the little dudes that drew down on Toot as Toot has his gun aimed at Big E.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Sit Your big ass down.” Toot says, rushing over to Big E with his gun aimed. Big E continues to stand with his palms on the table as Toot has his weapon aimed at his temple. Hearing the bell from the entrance, I see Sean come in quickly with his rifle aimed as I grab this dude behind his neck and rush him to the wall. As I have this dude pinned against the wall with my gun to the back of his head, I notice people in the restaurant, even three people of the Go Gang, run out as Sean approaches the table. Everything went silent before one boy at the table tried to run, but Sean hits him with the butt of the rifle as he tried to pass him. Toot quickly took his gun off Big E and aimed it at the man on the floor as along with Sean. Big E quickly takes out his gun and aims it at Toot. Toot quickly draws his gun at Big E along with me after I throw the dude I had pinned to the floor, then kicking him in the mouth.
“What the f**k do you want, Kilo?” Big E asked as his eyes and gun is locked on Toot.
“Right now, I want you and your boys to put the guns on the table before things get ugly, now!” I demanded as I c**k my nine and aim it at Big E.
“Okay, Big E says slinging his gun down the table to me, then throwing up his hands. Slowly pulling a chair out for himself at the table. I watch him reach around his waist. I hesitantly grip my trigger as he comes out with another weapon and puts it on the table. Sean Walks around the table to where I am, grabs the guns off the table, and places it in a garbage bag that he had inside his trench coat. Sean also collected guns from the dude I kicked in the mouth under the table. Noticing the man on the other side of the table on the floor has a weapon on his side, I walk over to him and snatch it off of him and tucked it on my side. Sean notices and walks over to where I was and began patting him up. The dude on the floor acts as if he doesn’t want to be touched. I kneel next to him and push the gun to his jaw. He gave up, and Sean got the Glock off his backside after flipping him to his side. Sean walked over to the middle of the floor and aimed the rifle at everyone.
“Toot, go check out the back. He quickly rushes to the back, tucking his gun on his side. I don’t hear anybody laughing," I said, smirking at Big E as I walk up beside him. Placing my hand on his shoulder, I slightly squeeze. Big E turns and looks at Sean as he has his rifle on the dudes on the floor.
“I heard you visited my spot. Was getting with me part of your f****d-up plan?” Big E asked as he lights a cigar that was sitting on the table. Sean calmly walks over to Big E with his gun to slap the cigar from his mouth. I move my hand as blood flies my way, staining my white shirt.
“b***h playtime is over Sean says, busting Big E in the mouth with the butt of the rifle. They should have told you that my boy is back, and we are here to take back what’s ours.” Watching the blood spew from his mouth made me feel as if I’m back in control again. It made me feel as if I can run the world with only a little force.
“Damn, I chuckle before noticing one dude on the opposite side of the table that was on the floor trying to get up. I quickly aimed my gun at him, and he threw up his hands. That’s what the f**k I thought, sit the f**k down. Look, the next p***y try something gone get something real hot in they chest.” I said, pointing the gun around at everyone as the dude took a seat across from Big E. I look from the table and see Toot walking in with two big garbage bags tied up. He rushes over to the man on the floor and stands him up. I walk over to where they are to see what’s going on.
“This motherfucker was reaching for something in his sock.” I pulled up his pants leg and reviled a knife.
“Didn’t I tell you p*****s if you try me? I’ll put something hot in your chest? I said with my gun aimed at him. You must think this s**t a game?” I ask as I mush his nose with the gun as Toot holds him up by the neck of his t-shirt. The dude coughs repeatedly.
“Please, Mann,” the dude says, wheezing, gasping for air before I let one go in his chest. The dude holds his chest, screams, and cries loudly before Toot lets him go. He hits the floor hard and balls ups moaning and groaning before he began coughing up blood.
“f**k,” Big E screams.
“Anybody else want to try me? Huh! huh!” I scream, walking back to the table heated by how ignorant people can be.
“What you want, Mann?” Big E asks after spitting blood from his mouth.
“I really need you to hear me when I say this. Walking over to Big E, I pull out a chair next to him and pass him a napkin as I took a seat. Just as he finishes wiping his mouth and placing the bloody napkin on the table, I aggressively grab the back of his big neck and pull him to me. screaming everything into his ear before he turns his head and covers the ear I screamed in. I grab him by the arm to sit him up as he’s holing his ear with both hands. So what’s its gonna be?” I ask, aiming my gun at the dude sitting across the table from him.
“f**k, not everything. He squills, hitting the table as he takes his hands from his ear. Please,” Big E begs, looking me deep into my eyes.
“Alright, I’ll let you live only because I know you have a kid. I said, shaking my gun in his face. Toot load that s**t up, I said as I got up as for you, Big boy. Referring to Big E, I gently place my hand on top of his head as he squirms for me to move. I pat his head and walk over to Sean, as he still has his rifle on everyone at the table. I want half of everything.”
“Half,” Big E says, startled by what I said.
“Hell yeah, and half of everything from the restaurants, the drug sales, and whatever else you have out here on the streets,” I said dramatically, walking away.
“Huh.”
“Yeah, I said, walking back over to him. If you sell a dime bag in my town, b***h, I want half.” I said, shoving my gun into his side temple.
“Okay, Okay,” he says as I release the gun from his face.
“Alrighty then, I said, putting my gun on my waist. Well, meet here every Sunday at twelve for my cut. The first time you stand me up, I’ll find you. I said as I snatched the rifle from Sean and aimed it at Big E. I’ll kill you, your mama, your kids, and your b***h. Big E sits shaken up by it all with his hands in his lap. Do you understand me, big boy?”
“Yea, Mann.” He says nervously.
“Cool, I passed Sean the rifle and began heading for the door. As I make it to the door, I look back and notice Sean walking backward to me with the rifle still on them as they sit at the table. As Sean gets closer to the open door, I hold open the door for him. We both make it out the door, running across the street over the tracks to the car. Noticing Toot has the car running, I rush over to the passenger side. Sean and I get in, and Toot Passes me a blunt before he speeds off. After hitting the blunt and putting it out, I look in the back seat to Sean and back to Toot. We did that s**t, Mann.” I said, dapping Toot up as we all scream, laughing at the top of our lungs. Chill, look, ahh head to your crib Toot, so we can go through these bags.
“Alright,” Toot says as he continues to speed.
We pull up to Toot’s crib after ten minutes of speeding. We all get out. Toot pops the trunk with the remote and throws me the keys to the car. Sean and I wait at the front door, patiently waiting for Toot to come with the bags so he can unlock the door. Noticing Toot struggle with the bag, I run over and grab one of them. Toot opens the door as Sean and I trail behind him. Sean sits on the sofa closer to the chair as I take a seat in the chair. Placing the bag between my legs, I notice Toot sit the other bag on the coffee table and proceed to his bedroom.
“Come on, Mann, let’s count this s**t up so I can take this girl her car, I said, pulling the coffee table closer to me. Dumping one of the bag, I look over at Sean as his eyes got big. Mann, this got to be over a meal ticket." I said enthusiastically. Toot walks in, grinning from ear to ear, screaming he’s rich as he places the money counter on the tv stand. Toot grabbed three-stack in both hands and began dancing around in a circle.
“Mann, it’s only hundreds in here,” Sean says, dramatically flipping through the money.
“let’s count this s**t up. Toot says, slapping the money that’s in his hands together after taking a photo. Putting the cash back on the table, he grabs the money counter from the tv stand. As I move most of the money on the floor to make room for the counter, Sean rips open the other bag and stack it up next to him.
Only the sound of the bills flipping as we sit counting money for three hours. I cut off the counter as I finished with it, noticing Sean and Toot finishing up. “I counted ten hundred thousand.” Toot says excitedly.
“I counted nine hundred thousand,” Sean says.
“Okay, and I counted eight hundred million. So you know what that means.”
“What?” Sean and Toot say simultaneously with a confused look on their faces.
“We leveled up, we rich. I say, excited. Let’s split this so I can dip. Kiesha has been calling me for an hour for her car.” I said, reading my text, noticing its one in the morning. Sean splits the money and places my portion back into one of the large garbage bags. I dap Sean and Toot up before grabbing my money and heading out.
