Margaret took the knife by the handle and started cutting at the silk sashes that bound her. It was not a very effective strategy, it turned out, because the knife slipped off of the surface of the silk more often that it stayed on it and actually cut anything. Several time the knife slipped and nicked her wrist, and drops of fresh blood soon patterned the bed and the silk. She changed tactics and pulled the silk taut, spreading it wider and then stabbing the blade through the middle. It made a hole which she then ripped all the way across to both sides.
