A horse-drawn carriage awaited them, crowds lining the streets and cheering as they made the journey back to the Palace. Once there, they went up to one of the sitting rooms that faced the courtyard and waited for Elizabeth and the Duke's family. While the townspeople could not all come to the wedding, they had been invited to enter the courtyard to see the newly wedded couple. When the Queen arrived with the Duke's family, they all stepped onto the balcony. The crowd immediately hurrahed and clapped, with some even throwing their hats into the air, and the cheers only increased once the couple shared a kiss on the balcony, as was customary.
