Chapter 1: The Night I Lost Everything
The rain fell in relentless sheets, soaking Isabella Romano's white dress until it clung to her trembling body. Her mascara had long since washed away, but the tears kept falling anyway.
She stood outside the towering gates of the De Luca estate, staring at the man she had loved for three years.
Lorenzo De Luca.
The most feared mafia don in the country.
The only man who had ever made her believe she could have a future beyond fear.
Tonight, he looked at her as if she were a complete stranger.
"I warned you never to come here," Lorenzo said, his voice cold enough to cut through the storm.
Isabella shook her head. "You haven't answered my calls for weeks. Your guards wouldn't let me in. I had no choice."
He slipped both hands into the pockets of his tailored black coat, his expression unreadable.
"There is nothing left for us to discuss."
Her heart cracked.
Nothing left?
After every promise? Every stolen kiss? Every whispered plan for a future together?
"You told me you loved me."
"I did."
His answer came so quickly that hope flickered inside her.
Then he crushed it.
"But love is a weakness I can no longer afford."
The words struck harder than any slap.
She stared at him, unable to believe the man before her was the same Lorenzo who had once held her through sleepless nights and sworn that no one would ever hurt her.
"What happened?" she whispered. "Tell me the truth."
Silence.
Only the sound of rain echoed between them.
"I found someone else," he finally said.
The world stopped.
"No..." she breathed.
"You heard me."
"You're lying."
His jaw tightened, but his face remained emotionless.
"My fiancée arrives tomorrow."
Every ounce of color drained from Isabella's face.
Fiancée?
Impossible.
Just last month, he had been talking about buying a house by the sea.
Just last week, he had kissed her forehead and promised that everything would be okay.
"You promised we'd get married."
"I changed my mind."
Those four words destroyed everything she believed.
She searched his eyes, desperate to find the warmth that had always been there.
Instead, she found only ice.
"If this is because of your family, we'll figure it out together."
"You don't understand this world."
"Then help me understand!"
"You never will."
A painful silence stretched between them.
Finally, Isabella took a shaky step backward.
"So... that's it?"
"Yes."
"You want me to disappear?"
"Forget me."
She laughed bitterly, though tears continued to stream down her face.
"You make it sound so easy."
Lorenzo didn't answer.
After several long seconds, she nodded.
"I hope one day," she whispered, "you remember what it feels like to lose the only person who ever loved you without fear."
She turned and walked away into the storm.
She never looked back.
Hidden beneath her coat, her trembling hand rested protectively over her stomach.
She had only learned the truth that morning.
She was carrying Lorenzo De Luca's child.
He would never know.
Not after tonight.
Not after destroying the future they had dreamed of together.
As the taxi disappeared into the rain, Lorenzo remained frozen where he stood.
Only when the taillights vanished did he allow the mask to crack.
He closed his eyes.
"Forgive me, Bella," he whispered into the empty night.
"You'll hate me now..."
"...but at least you'll live."
Behind the mansion walls, a phone rang.
Lorenzo answered immediately.
"The shipment has been intercepted," one of his men said. "The rival family knows about Isabella. They've marked her for death."
Lorenzo's grip tightened on the phone.
"They're too late."
He looked toward the empty road where she'd disappeared.
"I already broke her heart to save her life."
He didn't know he'd also lost the chance to watch his own child grow up.
