Chapter 4

412 Words
For the next few days, I stayed out of the house and checked into a hotel. By day, I worked with my lawyer on asset transfers. By night, I compiled evidence of Warren and Lucy's embezzlement of company funds. Warren was eerily quiet. He only sent me a single w******p message. Warren: Stop this drama. Come home. Lucy has already moved out. I didn't reply. It wasn't until the afternoon of the fifth day that he finally called, "Summer, let's talk tonight." His voice softened, carrying that familiar patronizing tone dressed up as compromise. "I booked a table at Maison du Ciel, your favorite restaurant." "Fine." I agreed without a second thought. At seven sharp, I showed up. An hour passed, and Warren still hadn't arrived. I didn't chase him. I just sat there in silence, sipping lemon water. At 8:30 PM, my phone buzzed. It wasn't Warren. An unknown number sent me a photo. In the photo, Warren was on a carousel at an amusement park, holding Lucy in his arms as she laughed brightly. The caption read: Thank you, Warren, for celebrating my birthday with me. I feel so lucky to have you! I stared at the image, a cold smile forming on my lips. I signaled the waiter, paid, and walked out. Back at the hotel, I laid the divorce agreement on the table. At 11 PM, the doorbell rang. I opened the door. Warren stood outside, still carrying the lingering scent of Lucy's perfume. "Why are you in a hotel?" He frowned as he stepped inside and threw his jacket onto the sofa. "Something came up at the company tonight. I couldn't get away. Don't be mad. I'll get you a handbag tomorrow." He loosened his tie, reaching for me as if to pull me into his arms. I shifted aside and gestured toward the table. "Take a look at this," I said evenly. Warren froze for a beat, then stepped over and picked up the document. The instant his eyes hit the words "Divorce Agreement," his pupils tightened. "Summer, what the hell is this?" His face went pale. "Just what it says." I met his gaze. "Sign it." He stared at me, searching my expression for any sign of a joke. There was none. "Are you serious?" His voice wavered. "Warren, I'm giving you what you want." I tapped the lipstick stain on his collar. "From now on, you won't need to play my husband any longer."
