Chapter 3

620 Words
I took a cab to the office. Warren and I had founded this company together. In the early days, to keep costs down, I handled the workload of three employees by myself, pulling all-nighters on proposals, chasing clients, and working until I developed chronic stomach problems. Now that the business was flourishing, he had brought Lucy in as his secretary. The moment I entered the office floor, I overheard employees chatting in the break room. "Did you see Ms. Quinn's post? She was with Mr. Smith last night!" "I did. They were even dressed like a couple. Can you imagine how furious his wife would be if she saw it?" "Furious for what? Mr. Smith dotes on Ms. Quinn these days. He even gave her credit for that huge client deal." I pushed open the break room door. The conversation died instantly. Several employees greeted me with forced smiles. "Good morning, Ms. Lynn." "Which client deal?" I asked. "The... the Horizon Group account," an intern replied nervously. The Horizon Group contract was something I had spent three months fighting to secure. I was supposed to finalize it after my father's birthday party last night, but Warren's betrayal had thrown me off completely, and I had forgotten all about it. I headed straight for Warren's office. The room was empty when I walked in. I sat down at his computer and entered the password. Wrong password. He had changed it. I let out a cold laugh. Then I used the spare key to unlock his desk drawer. Inside was a signed contract. Party A was the Horizon Group. And in the signature block for Party B, one name stood out unmistakably: Lucy Quinn. My hands shook as I stared at the document. It wasn't just taking credit for someone else's work. It was outright embezzlement. The office door suddenly opened. Warren walked in with Lucy beside him. The second he spotted the contract in my hand, his face tightened. "Summer, why are you digging through my desk?" He crossed the room and yanked the contract from my grasp. "This deal had been mine for three months. Why is Lucy the one who signed off on it?" I said. "Summer, don't take it personally." Lucy instantly put on a hurt look. "You weren't around last night, and the CEO of Horizon Group was pushing to close the contract. Warren couldn't get ahold of you, so he asked me to sign for you. I never meant to steal your credit." "Sign for me?" I gave a cold, sharp laugh. "And does that include routing the commission straight into your account?" Warren's face immediately sank. "Summer, that's enough!" he barked. "Lucy spent the whole night drinking with the client and ended up with a bleeding stomach! What's the harm in her taking a little commission? As my wife, can't you be a bit more generous?" "Generous?" I stared at him. "Warren, did you forget this company is half mine?" "Don't throw that in my face!" Warren snapped, clearly touched a nerve. "You've been sitting at home these past few years living easy. Who's actually been running the company? Do you even realize how much Lucy has done for me?" Looking at his expression, I felt a surge of disgust. "Fine. Whatever." I nodded and said no more. I went back to my desk and started copying the core data. "What are you doing?" Warren watched me suspiciously. "Backing up my work files," I said without looking up. "Since you think Lucy is so capable, then from now on, she can take over everything in the company." With that, I pulled out the thumb drive, grabbed my purse, and walked out of the company.
