-Ethan Owen- "Inform Layla to submit her credentials by Monday. You know how we do the hiring of new tech developers," I said, walking along with my sister to the sitting room on the second floor. "I know, brother. But Layla is a genius like me. Well, except for Eva Brooks…" Angelina murmured with a roll of her eyes, and my eyes widened as my heart skipped a beat. "What did you just say? Who is Eva Brooks?" I asked my sister, looking at her face sharply, as she didn't know that I was aware of one Eva Brooks. Or were there two of them? Angelina crossed her arms over her chest and scoffed. "Brother, you won't know the poor church rat. She cheated on her fiancé on Friday night, who was sponsoring her through the Elite University in Dominic City. You know how costly that university is. Well, Eva is more of a tech pro than me, but she wanted to work for her brother's wife's company. You won't believe that her entire family are freeloaders, yet she chose to cheat on a man who was helping her to become someone valuable. That's why I hate those broke people. They will pay you back with betrayal after all you do to make them love you." Angelina gritted her teeth and had an angry look on her face, and I gulped hard. "Well, you are right and wrong at the same time," I spoke to my sister calmly, and her eyes narrowed at me. "What do you mean? Well, you will not know who Eva Brooks is. She is my course mate, but I wouldn't believe that she is a cheap slut who sleeps around with men for money. She has a pretty face, but her heart is as dark as charcoal. Thank goodness I didn't give her any chance to come close to me. Gosh. I hate betrayals!" My sister screamed, and I felt a throbbing headache again. I was just getting to know Eva, and I wouldn't want to think of her as a cheap woman, mainly because I was the first man to sleep with her. But with the way my sister had spoken so badly of Eva, I knew that if I told Angelina the truth, she wouldn't believe me. "It's fine, Angelina. But don't worry about Eva. I think instead of bashing her, you should try to hear her own part of the story." I peered at Layla's face, who was smiling, and I saw her frown. "What's that supposed to mean, Big Brother? Do you know Eva? Is she one of your cheap sluts? Well, I know you have an aversion to women, so there's no way that you must have hooked up with her. I am relieved by that," Angelina smiled, and I smiled too, not wanting to tell her the truth that Eva was with me the previous night. "You're right. I don't know your coursemate. So where are you going to? You seem dressed up?" I asked when Angelina walked away. "We are going to the hotel. Brother Festus invited me to attend his fashion launch. He also invited many models as well, as it's a big clothing launch. I don't want to miss out," Angelina squealed happily, and I sighed. "Alright. I am also heading there," I said, and she rushed to meet me. "Really? Then let's go together. I was about to head there with Layla, but I was told to bring my plus one. And I don't have any boyfriend at the moment," Angelina said, her voice sad, and I sighed. "Angelina, I cannot drive you both. Call Mom's driver to take you there," I replied, my tone firm as I wanted to walk away, but my sister begged me. "Please, Ethan, I won't make noise while you're driving. I don't want to get kicked out of the event," Angelina begged, and I sighed. "Alright. You both come along, and you will sit in the back seat," I said, before we made our way downstairs. Feeling famished, I paused to speak with my sister. "I am famished. Let's have something to eat, before we leave, as I don't like to eat at public gatherings." "Me too," Angelina replied, before looking over at her friend and asking her to join us. "Come and join us, Layla," she said. "Alright," Layla replied calmly, her eyes fixed on me, but I didn't spare her a single glance at all. My mother happily walked out of the kitchen with a tray of delicious meals to meet us in the dining room. The sweet aroma filled my nostrils and made me hungrier. "It's been long since I served you as my kids. How time flies," Mom said, her voice filled with excitement as she set the tray of food on the long dining table and served me first, before she moved over to serve my sister. "Mom," I smiled and responded, "I can come home to eat often." "No way, Ethan. You're already grown. I want your children to come home to me to take care of them. You and Angelina should get serious and bring suitors home. We need the presence of grandchildren in this house and not grown adults." "Fine, Mom. Let's eat. We are heading out," I replied, before the table fell silent, as I knew that once my mother started talking, she wouldn't stop until another topic came up. "Alright," Mom agreed calmly, not pressing further. She sat next to me, while Layla sat next to my sister. "Layla, would you like to eat with us?" Mom asked my sister's friend, and Layla shook her head before she looked at me. I didn't like Layla, but I couldn't send her away because she was Angelina's course mate. "No, Ma. I am filled up," Layla replied, and my mother nodded with a smile. "Alright. Be our guest," Mom said, before she picked up her spoon and dived into her delicious meal. She joined my sister and me in eating the delicious plate of plantain porridge with cooked fish. After dinner with my mother and sister ended, I drank a glass of warm water and rose to my feet to leave the house. "Mom," I informed her, "let me see Grandma Anita first and let her know that I am leaving the house." "Alright, Ethan," Mom agreed, while I made my way to the top floor to find my grandma. "Grandma," I called, seeing my grandmother seated on the sitting room's black couch with my dad. "Ethan, where are you going to? I hope you're not running away again because I asked you to marry?" Grandma Anita asked, her voice laced with concern, to which I laughed. "No, Mama. I am going to a family event at the hotel. My cousin, Festus, is having a clothing launch tonight." "Oh, that's fine. You see that Festus Norman is married. You should marry too," Grandma Anita replied with a smile, and I nodded. "I will, Grandma. Take care of yourself. "Dad, I have to go, and I might not come home tonight," I said, my voice calm, and my father sighed. "Alright, Ethan. But make sure that you invite Freya Dallas and take her along," Dad reminded me, and I had almost forgotten. "That's true. Festus reminded me to invite Freya. I will do that now," I replied, to which my father nodded, and I left the sitting room after saying goodbye to my grandmother. Standing at the balcony that led to the first floor, I dialed Freya's phone number to know if she would like to hang out with me in my hotel.
