BENEATH THE MANOR

Beyond the Silk Veil Chapter Ten: Beneath the Manor The silence that followed Thomas's disappearance was deafening. The marble floor slowly sealed itself, erasing every sign that a hidden elevator had ever existed. Seraphina stood frozen. The man who had tucked her into bed as a child... the man who had comforted her after her mother's funeral... had betrayed them all. Alexander sank into a nearby chair, his face pale. "I trusted him with everything," he murmured. Ethan clenched his fists. "That's exactly why the Veil Society chose him." Celeste folded her arms. "We're wasting time. Thomas is heading to Blackwood Manor." Seraphina looked at the brass key in her hand. "So are we." Just before dawn, two black SUVs left the Laurent Estate. Inside the lead vehicle sat Seraphina, Ethan, Celeste, and Alexander. No one spoke. The forest surrounding Blackwood Manor grew thicker with every mile. Fog drifted between towering pine trees, swallowing the narrow road. Finally, the mansion appeared. It stood exactly as it had in the old photograph. Its stone walls were scarred by fire, yet the structure remained standing like a wounded giant refusing to fall. Seraphina stepped out of the vehicle. "This is where Mother died." Ethan nodded quietly. "And where the truth has been buried." The massive front doors groaned open. Dust danced in the pale morning light. Portraits lined the walls, many blackened by smoke. One portrait caught Seraphina's attention. It showed her grandfather, Richard Laurent, standing beside several distinguished men. Among them was a much younger Victor Ashcroft. Alexander stopped in his tracks. "I hoped this portrait had been destroyed." "It wasn't," Celeste replied. "It was hidden." Following the directions in Isabella's journal, they entered the mansion's library. The room had collapsed in places, but one enormous stone fireplace remained intact. Seraphina examined the carving above it. A crown wrapped in flowing silk. The same symbol she had seen in the underground chamber. She reached into her pocket and removed the brass key. "There." Ethan pointed to a small keyhole hidden beneath the carving. Seraphina inserted the key. It fit perfectly. With a deep metallic rumble, the fireplace slowly slid aside. A spiral staircase descended into darkness. Cold air rushed upward. Alexander whispered, "I've never been down there." The four descended carefully. At the bottom lay an enormous underground vault. Shelves filled with ledgers, paintings, locked boxes, and stacks of sealed documents stretched into the darkness. In the center stood a steel table. On it rested a single leather-bound book. Its cover bore one inscription. THE VEIL LEDGER Ethan approached cautiously. "This is it." Seraphina opened the book. Every page contained names. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges. Bank accounts. Secret payments. Records stretching back nearly a century. "This could destroy the Society," she whispered. Before anyone could speak— A slow clap echoed through the chamber. Victor Ashcroft stepped from the shadows. This time he wasn't alone. Thomas stood beside him. Nearly twenty armed members of the Veil Society surrounded the vault. Victor smiled. "Congratulations." "You found exactly what I wanted." Ethan stepped in front of Seraphina. "You'll never leave here with it." Victor laughed. "Oh, Ethan..." "I don't need the ledger." He looked directly at Seraphina. "I need the final page." "The final page?" she asked. Victor nodded. "The one your mother removed before she died." Seraphina's heart skipped. She remembered the missing pages in Isabella's journal. "They're gone." Victor's smile widened. "No." "They're hidden." He raised his cane and pointed it at Seraphina. "And I believe... you have the only clue to finding them." Thomas stepped forward. "Search them." The Society members advanced. Ethan drew his weapon. Celeste picked up an iron bar from the floor. Alexander stood beside his daughters. For the first time in decades, the Laurent family stood united. Victor's voice echoed through the vault. "This is your last chance." "Give me the missing pages..." "...or none of you will leave Blackwood Manor alive." The air grew tense. No one moved. Then, from somewhere deep within the vault, an old mechanical bell began to ring. Once. Twice. Three times. The walls trembled violently. Dust rained from the ceiling. Ethan looked up in alarm. "The vault is collapsing!" Victor's smile vanished. "What have you done?" Seraphina stared at the trembling walls, remembering the last sentence of her mother's letter: "When the truth is finally uncovered... let the past bury itself forever." The rumbling grew louder. And somewhere behind the shelves, a hidden door slowly began to open.
