“ To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” – C.S. Lewis
"How long have you been working with him?" The first question Xavier asked as soon as they got in the car.
"He started about a week ago, why are you asking though?" She questioned suddenly extremely confused about the interrogation.
"Was it your decision to hire him? And what information do you have over him?" He continued without paying any heat to her question.
"How does all this concern you? "
"Just answer my damn question!" He shouted with his veins popping from his neck.
"Whoa, would you calm down? Emily hired him while I was away. And yes, we got all information needed about him." She answered not wanting to continue whatever was causing him to be this angry.
Xavier did not say anything for the rest of the ride, he just kept throwing glares at Mia then and again, never whispering a word.
"Okay, what is going on?" Mia asked as soon as he parked the car in front of their house. Xavier got out of the car taking the bag having the dress Taylor just gave Mia to try.
"Xavier! Give the dress back!" Mia shouted as she walked behind him trying to get the bag back.
"Fire him" Xavier finally spoke as soon as they reached the inside of the house.
"What?" Mia asked pausing for a moment to take into thinking what he was saying. "No of course not!" She answered still trying to snatch the dress from his hands. "Give me the bag dammit!"
"I said Fire him" he answered again certainly glaring at her trying to scare her.
"Stop! Stop! Stop! You have been trying to control my life ever since I met you! Stop now! I am not going to fire him and neither I am going to let you control my life anymore" She responded, speaking from the frustration since the moment she met him.
Without even a second wait she was pinned against the door Xavier just closed as they both got inside. He was close to her now, too close and his eyes had an emotion she has never seen before. An emotion that scared her.
"You think this is all fun for me?" Xavier spit with these hands wrapped tightly around her neck, making it hard for her to breathe. "I hate the fact that I met you the day I did, you have been nothing but a pain in my ass and an ungrateful brat who lives off this perfect life. You know what? I petty you instead, even if I would have killed you that night nobody would have cared cause guess what princess, nobody cares about you."
At this point, Mia did not even know that she was crying, what was it? The harshness in this tone? The coldness in his eyes? Or the fact that he was right? That even if she would have died that day nobody would have cared.
"Save me from the act Mia, fire him tomorrow because I really do not want to do anything that you would not like." He spoke releasing his hands from her throat and walking away without a second glance. She did not even realize that she was holding her breath until she could breathe now. She could feel all over her body how his words have punched her again and again. She did not realise how weak she was until he just called her now.

"No not today please" it was the 10th time her phone had rang in the past 5 minutes. It was already 10 AM way past the time she should have been up but today she just could not find in herself to get up and go to work. Maybe this was her way to delay dealing with whatever happened yesterday, the thought of facing Xavier after yesterday made her want to crawl back in bed and not get up anytime soon. Her phone chimed again, indicating a text this time she decided to check it out.
7 Missed calls from Emily
2 Missed calls from Taylor
1 Missed call from an unknown number
1 Text from Xavier
Get ready in 10 mins, I will drop you to at work.
She scoffed as she read the message. "Do not try to be all nice now " She spoke to herself before forcing herself out of the bed. She did not want to start yet another argument, because as much as she hated to admit it her life did depend on him.
"What time should I pick you up after work?" Xavier asked as he parked outside her boutique. The whole 20 mins of the ride consisted of him looking straight at the front and Mia keeping her distracted by looking outside the window.
"You do not have to, I will ask Emily to drive me home" Mia answered as she unbuckled her seatbelt, not looking at him.
"Mia, what time do I pick you up?" Xavier asked again in a stern voice as he was trying hard not to get frustrated at her.
"I do not know when I will be done, it is better if Emily just dropped me home." She answered as she tried reaching to the door handle to open the door. Before she could do that, there was a swift sound clearly indicating Xavier had locked the door.
"Xavier –"
"What time?"
She sighed and answered "After 6 "
He nodded acknowledging the fact that he had his answer "Now do you remember what you must do today? " He asked turning to look towards her. Of course, how can she forget?
"Yes. Can I please go now?" She asked yet not looking at him though she would feel his eyes in her, watching her, daring to argue against him right now.
"Yeah" He answered before unlocking the door" I will pick you up at 6." She just nodded before getting out of the car and almost sprinting towards the boutique.
Tough decisions to be made today.
