The second knock came just as I was starting to relax. My heart skipped a beat, and I frowned at the door, half-expecting another round of silence. Seriously, was someone playing a game? Dragging myself up, I opened it with a little more force than necessary. “What is it—” My words caught in my throat as I found myself face-to-face with Mr. Hale.
