Chapter One
Stepping through the revolving glass doors of the Everstone Group, Lena Rivera took a breath so deep it almost hurt. This was it: her chance to finally prove herself, to step out from the shadows of every job she’d held to make ends meet, every late-night study session after work, and every tight budget that reminded her of all she’d given up. Her heart raced with excitement, but she kept her face calm and her posture confident. Today, she needed to look like she belonged. She’d worked hard to get here—an understatement. Raising her younger brother, Brian, hadn’t been easy, especially after they’d lost both their parents in a car accident when she was barely out of high school. The dreams she’d had back then—opening her wellness brand, creating something truly hers—had been shelved, maybe even forgotten, as she took on multiple jobs to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Now, Brian was almost through college, and this job at Everstone was her path forward. “Lena Rivera?” A voice pulled her from her thoughts. She turned to find a sharp-looking woman with a tablet in hand, her gaze sizing Lena up as if measuring her for a place in the company. “I’m Karen, HR. Ready for your onboarding?” “Absolutely,” Lena replied with a small smile. The butterflies in her stomach started to settle as Karen led her into a polished office suite filled with glass, sleek furniture, and an air of quiet intensity. Everything about this place screamed “prestige.” As Karen ran through her responsibilities, she couldn’t help but marvel at how far she’d come. For years, she had juggled shifts at diners, late-night waitressing gigs, and odd jobs, all while keeping her grades up and supporting her brother. The relentless grind had left little room for dreams or ambitions beyond survival, but now, here she was—working for one of the most prestigious companies in the city. She felt a thrill of pride that made all those sacrifices feel, at least for a moment, like they had been worth it. The onboarding was a whirlwind of handshakes and instructions, and just as Lena was getting her bearings, Karen leaned in with a raised eyebrow. “You know your manager is Damien Everstone, right?” Lena hesitated. She’d heard of Damien—everyone had. The enigmatic billionaire heir, known for his distant demeanor and his apparent disinterest in the very company he would someday control. “I’ve heard… a bit.” Karen gave a small chuckle. “Good luck, then. Damien doesn’t do ‘small talk,’” she added, lowering her voice conspiratorially. “Or ‘talk’ much at all.” Lena brushed off the warning with a nod, but curiosity bubbled in her. She hadn’t expected to work under Damien himself. She mentally adjusted her game plan, sensing that the stakes were about to be even higher. Karen led her through a maze of corridors and finally stopped outside a sleek black door. “Here we are. He requested to meet all new hires personally.” The door opened before she could reply, and Lena found herself looking up into eyes so dark they were almost black. Damien Everstone stood in the doorway, tall and strikingly intimidating. His gaze swept over her with a level of disinterest that bordered on dismissal. “Ms. Rivera,” he said, his tone as cold as the marble floor they stood on. “Welcome.” “Thank you, Mr. Everstone.” She kept her voice steady, meeting his gaze. If he expected her to falter under his scrutiny, he’d have to try harder. He stepped aside, gesturing for her to enter his office. She took a seat, gripping her portfolio in her lap, aware of the silence stretching between them. “You’re here as a marketing associate,” Damien began, his voice cutting through the quiet. “Our company runs on results, not intentions. I expect you understand that.” “Completely,” she replied, her voice cool and professional. He raised an eyebrow, either surprised or mildly amused—she couldn’t tell. “So, Ms. Rivera, tell me. What can you bring to Everstone that our other associates can’t?” Lena didn’t miss a beat. “I know what it means to work under pressure, to adapt and deliver results, even when resources are scarce. I’ve worked in roles that demanded innovation and persistence. I don’t just complete tasks, Mr. Everstone—I make an impact.” The corner of his mouth twitched in what could almost be mistaken for a smile. “Interesting.” He leaned back, watching her with a look that felt both scrutinizing and dismissive. “We’ll see if that impact holds up here.” Before she could respond, he glanced at his watch and stood, clearly signaling that the meeting was over. “Karen will show you to your department. You’ll report directly to me on select projects.” Lena rose, resisting the urge to scowl at his abrupt dismissal. “Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. Everstone.” He didn’t respond, simply nodding in her direction before turning back to his desk. She walked out, feeling both relieved and a little irritated. As Karen led her to her workspace, Lena’s mind buzzed with thoughts. Working with Damien would be no small feat. If he thought he could intimidate her, though, he was in for a surprise. She hadn’t survived everything, she had just to be cowed by a man with a trust fund and a bad attitude. --- Settling into her new workspace, Lena looked around, absorbing the bustling energy of the floor. From her desk, she could see into Damien’s office, though he was often absent, his presence felt in the cool, calculated calm that permeated the entire space. During her first few days, Lena focused on understanding her tasks, her team, and the nuances of Everstone’s operations. As expected, the workload was intense, but she thrived on it, her determination pushing her forward. Damien, however, was another story. He appeared sporadically, each time glancing at her work with a critical eye, his feedback sharp and occasionally unsettling. Lena found herself scrutinizing every word she used, every chart she presented, in anticipation of his comments. One morning, as she prepared her first big presentation, Damien appeared at her desk, silent and brooding as he reviewed her proposal. After a moment, he looked up, his gaze cool and assessing. “Your strategy is focused,” he began, “but you’re taking too many creative liberties with the budget. Everstone doesn’t indulge in excess.” Lena met his eyes, resisting the urge to roll her own. “Noted,” she said, biting back a sarcastic remark. “I’ll adjust accordingly.” He nodded, his face a blank mask as he walked away. As the days passed, his enigmatic nature gnawed at her. He was the kind of person who inspired whispered conversations, fueled by the mystery surrounding him. Some people on the team adored him, idolizing his status and success, while others tread carefully, wary of his mercurial nature. For Lena, he represented a challenge she hadn’t encountered before. His intensity was both infuriating and oddly intriguing, and despite her annoyance with his constant scrutiny, she found herself eager to prove herself in his eyes. If she could win his respect, it would be a validation of everything she had worked for. --- One evening, when most of her coworkers had already left, Lena stood late, determined to finish a proposal she knew Damien would review the next morning. She was absorbed in her work when she heard footsteps approaching. Glancing up, she saw Damien standing by her desk, his expression unusually soft, almost thoughtful. “Burning the midnight oil, Ms. Rivera?” he asked, his voice lower than usual. Lena managed a small smile. “Just making sure everything’s perfect for tomorrow.” He nodded, his gaze lingering on her. “Dedication is admirable, but don’t sacrifice everything for this job.” His words took her by surprise. She didn’t know if it was meant as advice or a warning, but something in his tone suggested he understood more about sacrifice than he let on. “I think it’s a bit late for that,” she replied softly, more to herself than to him. For the first time, she saw a hint of something vulnerable in his eyes, a glimmer of a person beneath the cold, guarded exterior. But just as quickly, it was gone, replaced by his usual cool detachment. “Good night, Ms. Rivera,” he said, his tone reverting to its usual clipped professionalism. “Good night, Mr. Everstone,” she replied, watching as he walked away, leaving her with more questions than answers. As she returned to her work, she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to him, hidden beneath the layers of mystery and control. And as frustrating as he was, she couldn’t deny the strange allure he held, a pull that left her both excited and wary of what lay ahead.
