Chapter Three

1343 Words
Lena arrived at the office early the next morning, determined to keep the momentum from the previous day’s victory. Damien's rare compliment still echoed in her mind, the acknowledgment that she had done well, even if it was wrapped in the usual cool distance. She knew better than to get too comfortable—Damien had been cold with her before, and she expected nothing less than perfection moving forward. She had been working on her final preparations for the wellness campaign all night, tweaking details, finalizing the event itinerary, and double-checking the product inventory. The pop-up events were fast approaching, and she was eager to execute them flawlessly. But when she walked into the office, she felt a pang of dread when she noticed Damien’s presence in the conference room, his tall frame hunched over a stack of papers. “Ms. Rivera,” he said, glancing up as she entered. “I’d like to speak with you about the event.” Lena straightened, her mind racing. “Of course, Mr. Everstone,” she replied, keeping her voice even. She couldn’t afford to let her nervousness show. “I reviewed the details for the upcoming launch,” he began, his voice as matter-of-fact as always. “It’s well-organized, but I have a few concerns.” Lena’s stomach tightened, but she didn’t flinch. “What concerns, sir?” He looked up at her, his gaze sharp and assessing. “The venue—this particular location is a high-traffic area, which is good, but the surrounding businesses might be a challenge. We could lose foot traffic to the competition.” Lena swallowed hard but kept her tone professional. “We’ve strategically chosen this spot because it aligns with the target audience’s lifestyle. It’s accessible, and the area has a lot of organic traffic that fits with our wellness brand ethos. Plus, the location allows for influencer engagement, which will give us social proof.” Damien tapped his fingers on the edge of the table. “That’s true. However, it’s still a risk. Have you considered how you plan to deal with this competition?” Lena hesitated, but then her confidence returned. “We’ve already planned cross-promotion with complementary brands. We’ll use live-streaming to create buzz, and we’ve scheduled influencers for key time slots to drive traffic.” Damien paused, his sharp eyes studying her carefully. For a brief moment, his lips pressed together as though mulling over her answer. Finally, he nodded. “I can see you’ve covered your bases. But I want you to keep in mind that not everything can be accounted for. You may face unforeseen challenges. Be prepared for them.” Lena nodded, acknowledging the gravity in his words. “Understood. I’ll have contingency plans in place.” He didn’t respond right away. Instead, his gaze lingered on her, as though weighing something. The silence between them was palpable, but it was a different kind of tension now. A subtle, almost imperceptible shift in the air. “You’ll be in charge of the event logistics, Ms. Rivera,” he added, his voice more decisive now. “I’ll be observing, but the execution is yours to manage.” Lena’s heart skipped. She had hoped for this—an opportunity to truly take charge—but having Damien watching her every move was both an honor and a curse. He never let anyone falter in his presence, and Lena couldn’t afford to be the exception. “Thank you, Mr. Everstone,” she replied. “I won’t disappoint you.” His lips twitched, though whether it was a smile or simply a shift in expression, she couldn’t tell. He stood, signaling the end of the conversation. “Good. I’ll expect you to show me something worthy of this company’s name,” he said, his tone once again cool and measured. As Lena walked out of the conference room, her thoughts spun. The weight of his words sat heavily on her shoulders, but there was something else too—a spark of determination. If Damien Everstone thought he could push her to her limits and watch her fail, he was in for a surprise. --- The days leading up to the first pop-up event were a blur of activity. Lena barely had time to eat, let alone sleep, as she handled every detail herself, from vendor coordination to influencer outreach. But despite the exhaustion, she felt alive with purpose. This event was her chance to prove to Damien, and to herself, that she was more than just capable of managing a campaign. She could run a brand experience. She spent most of the day at the event venue, overseeing the final touches. The area had been transformed into an inviting space, with soft lighting, natural elements like plants and wooden tables, and banners that showcased the brand’s wellness-focused mission. The influencers had arrived early, setting up their stations and preparing for their scheduled livestreams. As the hours passed, Lena found herself growing more and more nervous. She had done everything she could to prepare, but it wasn’t until the event actually started that the true weight of her responsibility hit her. She had to make sure everything went according to plan. Around midday, Damien arrived. He was dressed in his usual impeccable suit, his expression unreadable as he surveyed the bustling space. Lena’s stomach fluttered nervously, but she forced herself to remain composed as he approached her. “Ms. Rivera,” he said with a nod of acknowledgment. “Let’s see what you’ve got.” She straightened, trying to suppress the anxiety that gnawed at her. “Everything is on track, Mr. Everstone. The influencers are engaging with the audience, and we’re getting good traffic.” Damien glanced around, his gaze calculating as he took in the scene. “You’ve covered all the basics,” he said after a moment. “But you’re missing one thing.” Lena’s heart skipped. “What’s that?” He pointed to a group of attendees standing near the demonstration area, their attention drifting. “You need to keep the energy up. People are distracted. Create a sense of urgency. Make them feel like they’re part of something bigger.” Lena quickly adjusted, approaching the group of attendees with a warm, welcoming smile. She handed out product samples and invited them to participate in a quick challenge, offering small prizes as incentives. The energy in the room shifted immediately as the crowd became more engaged. Damien’s gaze followed her movements, his expression still unreadable. She returned to him after a few minutes, keeping her cool. “Better,” he said simply. “You’ve got potential, Ms. Rivera. But you’re not quite there yet.” Lena bit back a retort, instead focusing on the positive—he had complimented her efforts, albeit with his usual bluntness. With the event in full swing, Lena kept a careful eye on everything, adjusting the schedule as needed and ensuring that everything flowed smoothly. The influencers were posting live, the product demos were engaging, and the attendees seemed genuinely excited. As the day drew to a close, Lena stood back for a moment, surveying the success of the event. Her heart swelled with pride. Damien approached her again, his demeanor still distant. “You did well,” he said, surprising her for the second time in as many days. “This wasn’t a complete disaster.” She couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at her lips. “Thank you, Mr. Everstone.” “You’ve earned this one,” he said, though his words remained clipped. He looked at her, really looked at her, and for the briefest second, she saw something different in his eyes—a glimmer of approval, perhaps, mixed with something she couldn’t quite identify. As the day ended, and the event began to wind down, Lena couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The road ahead would be full of challenges, but for the first time, she felt like she had what it took to rise to them.
