Daniel’s heartbeat pounded violently against his chest. The motel room was swallowed by darkness after the power suddenly went out. The only sound was the steady rhythm of footsteps approaching Room 17. One step. Then another. Closer. Closer. Daniel instinctively slipped the handwritten letter into the inside pocket of his suit.
