The Divorce Papers
The first clap of thunder echoed across the city as heavy rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Kingsley mansion. Aria Bennett stood motionless in the grand living room, her trembling fingers clutching the edge of the dining table. The elegant white dress she had carefully chosen for their third wedding anniversary suddenly felt meaningless. The candles had long burned out. The dinner she had spent hours preparing was now cold. She glanced at the antique clock hanging on the wall. 10:47 p.m. “He promised he’d be home by eight,” she whispered, forcing herself not to cry. The sound of a car pulling into the driveway made her heart leap. “He’s home…” A smile spread across her face as she hurried to the front door. But the smile disappeared the moment the door opened. Ethan Kingsley stepped inside wearing his expensive black suit, his face cold and unreadable. Raindrops clung to his hair as if even the storm had failed to soften him. Behind him stood a beautiful woman in a red dress. Vanessa Cole. Aria froze. “Vanessa?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “What is she doing here?” Vanessa folded her arms, a smug smile playing on her lips. “I told you she’d look surprised.” Ethan didn’t answer. He walked past Aria without looking at the beautifully decorated dining table or the anniversary cake waiting beside it. Instead, he placed a brown envelope on the table. “Sign them.” Aria stared at the envelope in confusion. “What is this?” His deep voice remained emotionless. “Divorce papers.” Her world stopped. “What?” “I said sign them.” Aria laughed nervously, convinced this had to be some cruel joke. “Ethan… this isn’t funny.” “It isn’t a joke.” He looked directly into her eyes for the first time that night, but there was no warmth in them. Only disappointment. Only anger. “I know about your affair.” Her heart skipped. “My… what?” “Don’t insult my intelligence.” “I’ve never cheated on you!” Vanessa sighed dramatically. “Ethan, I told you she would deny everything.” Aria turned sharply toward her. “You stay out of this! This is between my husband and me.” Vanessa smirked. “Your husband? Not for much longer.” Aria looked back at Ethan, tears already forming in her eyes. “Please… tell me what’s happening.” Without saying a word, Ethan reached into his briefcase and threw a stack of photographs onto the table. The pictures scattered across the polished wood. Aria picked one up. Her face turned pale. The woman in the photographs looked exactly like her. She was embracing another man. Another photo showed them entering a hotel together. Another showed what appeared to be a kiss. “No…” Her hands began to shake. “This isn’t me.” “You expect me to believe that?” Ethan asked coldly. “They’re fake! Someone set me up!” “I trusted you.” “I swear on my life, Ethan, I’ve never even met this man!” His jaw tightened. “I hired a private investigator.” “What?” “The evidence is overwhelming.” Aria felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath her feet. Someone had planned this. Someone wanted to destroy her marriage. She looked desperately from Ethan to Vanessa. Then she noticed it. A tiny smile. Vanessa was smiling. Not a smile of sympathy. A smile of victory. At that moment, Aria realized something far more terrifying than the divorce papers. Someone hadn’t just framed her. Someone wanted Ethan to hate her. And judging by the satisfaction in Vanessa’s eyes… She already knew who it was.
