to rule them.Sent to the unforgiving, frozen court of Mournvale as a political pawn, the discarded bastard daughter of Oakhaven was expected to quietly break under the weight of Castle Blackthorn. Instead, she arrives with a terrifying, forbidden secret humming in her veins: the ancient art of shadow-weaving.When Evadne is assigned to tend to the reclusive Crown Prince Alistair—a man rotting away from what the court believes is an ancient curse—she immediately recognizes the truth. It is no supernatural affliction; it is a slow, methodical poisoning orchestrated by his own ambitious family. In the dying prince’s eyes, Evadne doesn't find a helpless victim, but a calculating predator waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Stranded in a nest of corporate vipers, Evadne offers Alistair a dangerous, unspoken alliance: her lethal magic in exchange for a throne of her own. With a brutal winter blocking the mountain passes and a political coup looming, Evadne masterminds a brilliant, theatrical trap. She spins a web of dramatic irony, letting the usurper Prince Julian and the Dowager Duchess believe their final, lethal dose of weeping nightshade has succeeded. Evadne plays the part of the weeping, terrified scapegoat to perfection, allowing herself to be chained while Julian marches into the Great Hall to steal the crown. But as the traitors celebrate their victory, the curtain drops. Evadne unleashes the full, crushing might of the dark, resurrecting a healthy prince and exposing the coup before the entire council. Her Queendom is a gripping dark fantasy of royal betrayal and lethal strategy. Chapter 1: The Ash Princess
The House of Oakhaven was built on a foundation of gold, pride, and blood. For seventeen years, Evadne lived in its deepest, coldest shadows—a living, breathing reminder of King Aldous’s brief, shameful lapse in judgment with a common palace maid. "A servant’s rat," Queen Malicent would spit, her sharp, manicured nails digging deep into Evadne’s young shoulders whenever the King was away. "You breathe my air. You eat my food. You will earn your keep in the dirt, bastard." And the dirt became Evadne’s domain. While her half-siblings dined on roasted pheasant and wore silks dyed the color of summer skies, Evadne slept in a damp, drafty alcove near the kitchens. Her wardrobe consisted entirely of their cast-offs—shredded gowns, stained tunics, and frayed rags that she had to stitch and mend herself just to stay warm. The servants ignored her, taking their cues from the royals, and the castle guards looked through her as if she were made of glass. The torment was a daily ritual, a cruel game the royal family played to alleviate their endless boredom. Her half-brothers, Prince Tristan and Prince Gareth, treated her like an animal to be hunted. Evadne still bore the faint, jagged scar on her ankle from the winter she turned fourteen. Tristan had set his hunting hounds loose in the hedge maze, laughing alongside his brother as she fled through the freezing thorns, weeping and bleeding into the snow while the boys cheered from the stone terrace above. Her half-sisters, Penelope and Rosalind, were far more refined in their cruelty. They preferred psychological ruin. They would deliberately spill ink on the palace’s priceless tapestries or smash expensive porcelain imported from across the sea, pointing their graceful fingers at Evadne and watching with smug satisfaction as the Queen ordered her to be flogged. Penelope’s favorite malice was ordering Evadne to brush her long, spun-gold hair, only to yank Evadne’s head down by her own dark, wild curls, forcing them both to look into the gilded mirror. "Look at us," Penelope would whisper, her voice dripping with venom. "I am a jewel of the realm. You are nothing but the mud beneath our boots. When I marry, I will buy you from Father just to make you my footstool." King Aldous did not actively join in the abuse; he simply looked through her. To the King, she was invisible. A non-entity. A ghost that occasionally scrubbed his floors, polished his chalices, and emptied his chamber pots. He had loved her mother once, or so the whispers went, but any shred of that affection had dried up the moment the maid died, leaving behind a dark-haired reminder of royal indiscretion. Until the dark winter of her seventeenth year, when the messengers from the Shadow Kingdom of Mournvale arrived. The Great Hall was stiflingly hot, the hearths roaring with massive oak logs that crackled like snapping bones. Evadne stood on her knees near the heavy velvet curtains, a heavy wooden bucket of lye and a stiff brush clutched in her chapped, bleeding hands. She was trying to scrub a dark red wine stain from the marble dais, keeping her head low and her breathing shallow as the King held court. The atmosphere in the room was suffocatingly tense. Rumors had been swirling through the capital for months: the Shadow Kingdom, a desolate and terrifying land of jagged mountains and perpetual mist to the north, was mobilizing its armies. Oakhaven’s borders were weak, the defenses neglected, and the treasury had been completely depleted by the King's lavish, failed territorial wars. "They demand a marriage alliance," the Grand Chancellor announced, his voice trembling as he read from a thick parchment sealed with heavy black wax. "The Sovereign of Mournvale offers a non-aggression pact, on one condition. King Aldous must send a daughter of his blood to wed the Crown Prince, Alistair." A collective, horrified gasp echoed through the court. Princess Penelope instantly burst into tears, throwing herself dramatically at Queen Malicent’s feet. "No! Father, please! They say Prince Alistair is a monster! They say he is cursed by the old gods, rotting alive from the inside out! I would rather die than go to that graveyard of a kingdom!" Princess Rosalind turned pale as death, her fingers clawing frantically at her mother’s heavy velvet robes. "He is a dying corpse, Father! You cannot send us to a tomb! They say the sun never shines in Mournvale and the people feast on blood!" King Aldous slammed his fist onto the gilded arm of his throne, the sound echoing like a thunderclap through the cavernous hall. "Silence! A treaty must be forged. Mournvale's shadow-knights will tear our borders apart and burn our fields to ash if we refuse. I will hear no more weeping." He looked down at his two legitimate daughters, his expression torn. For all his ruthlessness, he loved his golden heirs. They were his pride, his currency for future alliances with prosperous empires. He could not bear to sacrifice them to a dying, cursed prince in a land of nightmares. Queen Malicent’s sharp, feline eyes swept across the silent room. They passed over her weeping daughters, over her stoic, silent sons, and finally landed on the dark, dusty corner where Evadne knelt, holding her breath, her fingers frozen over the lye bucket. A slow, terrifying smile spread across the Queen’s face. "My King," Malicent purred, leaning close to her husband’s ear, though her sharp voice carried easily across the silent, tense hall. "The treaty specifies a daughter of your blood. It does not specify a daughter of the crown." The King blinked, his gaze slowly shifting toward the far corner of the room. For the first time in seventeen years, King Aldous looked directly into Evadne's eyes. There was no warmth in his stare, no lingering regret for the maid he had once discarded—only the cold, bloodless calculation of a merchant discovering a piece of forgotten inventory that could save his business. "Evadne," the King spoke, his voice booming off the stone walls. "Come forward." With trembling legs, Evadne stood and walked to the center of the hall. The court parted for her like water, nobles upturning their noses at the harsh smell of lye and old sweat radiating from her thin rags. "You will marry Prince Alistair of Mournvale," her father decreed, his voice devoid of any parental weight. "You will pack your things. You leave at dawn." Penelope let out a sharp, breathless laugh, her tears instantly drying into a triumphant, mocking sneer. Rosalind smirked, smoothing down her immaculate skirts. Tristan and Gareth grinned from the shadows, whispering to each other about how perfectly suited the dirty bastard was for a rotting, blood-coughing prince. Evadne looked at her father, then at the smug, cruel faces of her stepfamily. She felt a cold, hard knot form in her chest. The fear she expected to feel didn't come. Instead, a dangerous, quiet clarity washed over her, settling deep into her bones. They thought they were sentencing her to death. They thought they were throwing her into a landfill to rot in the frozen north alongside a dying man. "As you command, Your Majesty," Evadne said softly, bowing her head low. But as her face shadowed, her eyes flashed in the firelight with a cold, terrifying intensity. Enjoy your palace while you can, she thought, the very first embers of a dark, vengeful fire igniting in her soul. Because if I survive the dark, I am coming back to burn this house to the ground.
