Darian's Earth
The sun dazzled on the horizon like a big ball of fire. Its flares were almost visible with bare eyes. Not human eyes. But eyes like Darian's could easily pick up the leaping and slurping of the greedy inferno. Though Darian's eyes could capture that mesmerizing view, it, however, was inapt to soak in its hue. Those beautiful eyes of his would easily set ablaze even if they caught, physically, the tiniest of rays. He looked away as he put back the blinds and placed his icy cold hands behind his perfectly sharp ears. Now, sharp here is both literally and metaphorically. It was pointed at the lobes like the sharp edge of a sword. The helix of his ears heels too as red as firewood. But that wasn't what was implied when it was described as sharp. His ears could pick up sounds from miles afar. He sat with his hands wrapped around the back of his head as he heard the sounds of a million living souls, toiling on the ground. Some complained of old age. Some complained of being hot. Some complained of hunger. Others were mixed with sobs and cries of pain. He flipped through one of his favourite books in the dark. It was one of the items he savoured that he had saved from the h*******t.
The earth, as we know, is long gone. It was overtaken by Darian's kind. They might once have been human, but nobody knew their true roots. They resembled humans externally a lot, but that's all that there could be. Darian was a Night Crawler. They needed blood to feed. Humans were their top choice, with a few going for the mammals and carnivores as well. They had distinct hearing and sight. Their ears and mouths were also specially morphed like was said. The upper and lower lips were wine red. The teeth were as hard as ivory and they had pointed edges. Their tongues, too, were a little longer and were easily able to swish out of the mouth socket. The eyes, however, were very queer. They displayed a very whitish iris in low light that spit like a serpent when any harsh light fell on them.
Darian stood up after browsing through a few pages, his mind definitely on something else. He jumped down the stairs as he pulled on the sunblock jacket.
His hands and legs were very much longer than the average human on the street. His body was also very slender. He was taller than the crowd walking infront of him in a dreamy haze. As he pushed his way through them, as if in a hurry to get out of that farm.
A farm , that's correct. It harvests humans for consumption. But since the human population was already depleting, they weren't all killed at once. Instead, they were kept induced in a dreamy state. They were fed and let go around to breed. But all within the safe and secure boundary of the fortress, was Darian's home. It wasn't that there wasn't a human population outside the fort, but they were very numbered. The harsh living conditions along with constant hunting by Shifters and the Night Crawlers, made them seem more like rats, trapped in a mouse's maze. Darian advanced at an unusually fast pace as he checked his watch with a glance.
"Its almost time. " He murmured under his breath. Then, at a faster pace, he made his way away from human beings.
The sun on the horizon seemed to gradually loose its sheen. Darian smiled, the sharp edge of his left tooth bit on his lip's soft skin.
"Will not miss you this time, " he smirked and then, with a leap, went right on top of the well-built fortress, overlooking the steep hills.
Just as the last rays of the sun were about to dwindle in the darkness, Darian bared himself in its face as he fell along the wall, vertical. His chest caught fire, his tiny straight hair was ablaze. But just before what looked like an imminent suicide attempt, he fell with a loud splash in the ocean that laced the fortress.
But his wasn't the only splash, as there were many more. One splash after another as the blazing bodies rolled.
"That was awesome, Darian. You were just in time today, " A strong hand thumped Darian's back as they both got out of the ocean drenched.
" I had a day off today. Usually I dont get time after work these days, " Darian explained as he shook his body like a mutt, getting rid of all the unwanted wet.
" Yeah, we have heard. The Agency is working around the clock these days. Is the shortage as real as the forecast says? " The other Night Crawler asked as a few more joined.
They were all identically dressed in dark leather and chains. Their hair was all trimmed close to their heads, almost as if shaven. They seemed more like boys from a band, playing metal. The skin on the surface that burnt a few moments ago gradually replenished as they soaked in its aftermath. They heaved and sighed and laughed as if they were high on some drug not taken. Their eyes swooned as the bones got covered up again.
" Tell me. You feel good my boy Darian. Its been quite awhile. " Another pressed Darian down as he laughed from his sheer weight.
"Yeah! It did. As crazy as everytime. " He rolled with the other's weight on top as he laughed his lungs out.
" You should come more often. Do you know how much we miss you. " Another poked at his belly as he strained his neck to catch his view.
" Nile. How have you been, mate? Its really been a long time. Look how big you have got. " Darian complemented the young lad, jabbing affectionately at his belly. " But you can stop already boy. IT TICKLES, YOU i***t. And you too, Pumpkin, your weight is breaking my neck. "
The Night Crawlers named Nile and Pumpkin immediately let go of Darian as if shocked to have him offended. But he winked at them and pulled them together with both arms, jamming their heads. The boys rolled over and over, laughing and playing their endless game.
