Maya just finished making breakfast. Since Allison was always busy, she had taken the house chores as her duty and felt obliged in doing everything. Just as she laid the plates on the dinning table, she heard two footsteps running down the stairs and immediately recognizes them to be Jaden and Jason. “Good morning grandma” the kids shouted and fight their way to the sofa so they could watch their favorite morning show. “Careful Jason” Maya said when Jason almost fell his brother down. If it wasn’t for their blonde hair, no one would ever thought Allison gave birth to them. They looked nothing like her facially and their looks reminded Allison of a lot of painful memories though she never reacted to them. Their stunning hooded blue eyes, bumpy nose and thin lips were just like Dante’s. Maya watches them giggling as they had their eyes glued to the television. A smile formed on her lips as she was reminded of how Allison was when she was their age. She had been lovely and cheerful just like her kids are now but everything went wrong when her husband died in a car accident when Allison was just ten. Maya sighs as she remembered her dead husband. He had been the most lovable husband and a good father to their daughter but death wasn’t fair enough and half ruined their almost perfect family. “Mom” Allison called and Maya jolted out of her thoughts. She realized she had been staring at the children while she was lost in thought and Allison had caught her. Allison had watched her mother keenly when she got down from the stairs. Her expression was that of pity and sadness. She knew what her mother was thinking about but doesn’t want to acknowledge it. She was a little pleased for her to see her mother worry about her father again because she thought her mother had completely forgotten about her dead husband and moved on to Larry. She called her mother’s name and walks over to go to her side. “Have told you several times not to wake this early, I said I could make breakfasts, lunch and dinner on my day offs, isn’t that what we agreed on” Allison said and helped her mother in setting the table. “Don’t worry about me, I’m fully healthy and plus I rarely had to do hard works anymore” Maya said. “That is the main problem mum, you going off to part time works again, I told you my salary could cover up all the bills” Allison said with worry evident on her pale face. Maya waved her off with a smile. “You worry your ass a lot Allison, how about you go help the kids in getting ready for school” Maya said, trying to get them off the topic of herself as she actually wanted the conversation to be about Allison but she doesn’t want to rush it, she planned on talking privately with her after the children are off to school. Allison stares at her mother for a while, knowing she intentionally had the topic changed to something essential. She walks over to the kids who behaved like their mother wasn’t in existence right in front of them. “Come on guys, go get ready for school” Allison said calmly but they weren’t listening to her so she walks over to block their view of the television. “Mother !” Jason shouted and Jaden only frowns. Jason had always been the one who usually talks back or causes trouble in school. His personality was a lot different from Jaden’s, who had taken his mother’s taciturn personality. “Get up now !” Allison ordered and they both lazily raised up to rush up the stairs to their room. Allison walks back to her mother with a smirk. “I got them ready, now we have all the time to talk” Allison said and Maya shook her head. She knew how stubborn and adamant Allison could be about something. Allison had also thought of raising the topic of her mother’s secret relationship the very day but she wanted it to be when the kids are off to school. “There’s nothing to talk about Allison, I take my medications regularly and I go for checkups, Mr Douglas said have gotten much better, you saw the report too” Maya had once come up with an illness two years back. It was so difficult for Allison then as she blamed herself for being the cause of why her mother got the illness. She thought it was due to Maya’s hard past jobs and from then on, she doesn’t want Maya to work anymore but Maya wasn’t used to being idle so she decided to get a job that will be easy and convenient. Allison kept quiet once more while staring at her mother. If only Maya knew how much Allison fears to lose her. She had been totally down when Maya had collapsed two years ago and she found out about Maya’s disease. Maya had known about it but kept it away from Allison knowing because she doesn’t want her daughter worried. Jaden and Jason rushed down the stairs while they had been all dressed up for school. They take their seats and begin to dig into their meal. Allison sighs and also takes her seat so did Maya. “Mum, we are having an extra coaching after school for the upcoming competition” Jaden said with his teeth wild open in excitement. There’s only one thing that makes Jaden friendly, and that is the fact that he was obsessed with basketball. It was a trait she got from Dante and Allison was aware. Though both the kids played it but Jaden was more good in it than Jason was. Even though they were identical, their behaviors weren’t in anyway. Jaden was full of talents, he is intelligent like his mother was and also a good basketball player, Jason on the other hand had all the traits of Dante. He cared less about books and only cares about video games and things that seems fun. “Both of you?” Allison asked with her brows raised up. She hated that Jason hadn’t been more serious in anything because he was always left out in the competitions and it hurt Allison to know that he was lacking behind a lot. She always wanted them together as she doesn’t want them beefing one another. “Yes” Jason responded with somewhat a sad face. The only reason he had got into the team was because he hated to be left out in anything. He was a little intimidated by Jaden’s outstanding talents but hid it. Allison’s face lit up when Jason had responded. Jason had never been included in a competition and it was delightful for her to know he would finally join his brother in the pact of their success. She felt proud as a mother but then it was also her constant reminder of her failure to make her mother proud. Her lit face dulled and she focused on getting done with her meal so she could drop the kids off at school.
