Chapter 1: The Birthday Moon
The night air was thick with the scent of pine, bonfire smoke, and anticipation. The full moon hung heavy and bright above the Eclipse Pack territory, casting silver light over the ancient clearing where every major ceremony took place. Tonight was the most important night of my life—my eighteenth birthday, the night the Moon Goddess would reveal my fated mate.
I stood near the edge of the gathered crowd, my fingers nervously smoothing the soft white fabric of the dress Sofia had insisted I borrow. It was simple, but it made me feel prettier than the worn hand-me-downs I usually wore as an omega. My long dark hair fell in loose waves down my back, and I had even allowed Sofia to braid a few white flowers into it. For once, I wanted to look like I belonged.
But deep down, I knew I didn’t.
My name is Camila Rivera. I’m an omega—born without rank, without strength, without the fierce wolf spirit that higher wolves possess. In the Eclipse Pack, omegas like me clean the pack house, cook meals, mend clothes, and stay out of the way. We are useful, but never important. I had spent my entire life trying to be invisible, hoping that if I worked hard enough and stayed quiet enough, the cruel taunts and cold shoulders would stop.
Tonight, though, everything was supposed to change.
The mating ceremony had already begun. Couples who had found their mates years ago danced together under the moonlight, while younger wolves waited with bated breath for the pull—the undeniable magnetic force that would lead them to their destined partner. I watched as one she-wolf suddenly gasped, her eyes locking with a warrior across the fire. They ran to each other, laughing and crying at the same time. The pack cheered.
I envied them.
My heart beat faster as the minutes ticked by. I scanned the crowd, searching for any sign, any strange feeling. Nothing yet. Maybe the Goddess had forgotten me. Maybe omegas didn’t get mates.
And then it happened.
A sudden, powerful jolt shot through my entire body, like lightning striking straight into my heart. My breath caught in my throat. My skin tingled. My inner wolf—usually so quiet and timid—stirred for the first time, whispering one word over and over in my mind.
Mate.
I turned slowly, my eyes drawn across the bonfire as if pulled by an invisible thread. And there he was.
Alpha Mateo Vargas.
The future Alpha of the Eclipse Pack. Heir to one of the strongest bloodlines in the region. Tall, broad-shouldered, with tousled black hair that fell just above his sharp jawline, and eyes that glowed golden even in human form. He wore a simple black shirt that stretched across his muscular chest, sleeves rolled up to reveal powerful forearms. Every movement he made radiated authority, confidence, raw power.
He was staring straight at me.
The world around us seemed to fade. The noise of the pack, the crackle of the fire, the howls in the distance—all of it disappeared. There was only him. Only the intense pull that made my chest ache with longing.
His nostrils flared slightly, and I saw the exact moment recognition hit him too. His golden eyes widened for a fraction of a second before his expression became unreadable. But I felt it—the bond snapping into place on his side as strongly as it had on mine.
My heart soared higher than it ever had before.
Me? The Goddess chose me for him?
I took a small, hesitant step forward, a shy smile breaking across my face despite my nerves. The crowd began to part as Mateo started walking toward me, his long strides eating up the distance between us. Whispers rippled through the pack like wildfire.
“Is that… the omega?”
“The Alpha’s mate is Camila?”
“An omega? That can’t be right…”
He stopped just a foot away from me, towering over my much smaller frame. Up close, he was even more breathtaking. His scent—deep pine, warm musk, and something uniquely him—wrapped around me like a blanket, making my head spin and my knees feel weak.
I looked up at him, hope shining in my eyes. “Mateo…” I whispered, barely able to believe this was real.
He opened his mouth as if to speak my name, his deep voice already forming the first syllable. “Cami—”
A sharp, mocking laugh cut through the air like a knife.
Isabella.
The pack’s strongest she-wolf stepped forward from the shadows, her long blonde hair gleaming under the moonlight. She was everything I wasn’t—tall, confident, powerful, with a wolf spirit so fierce she could take down warriors twice her size. For years, the pack had whispered that she and Mateo were destined to be together, that their union would strengthen alliances and produce unbeatable heirs.
She slid her arm possessively through Mateo’s, pressing herself against his side as if she belonged there.
“Well, well,” Isabella said loudly, her voice dripping with disdain. “Is this some kind of joke? The Moon Goddess paired our future Alpha with… her?” Her cold blue eyes raked over me from head to toe, her lips curling in disgust.
I felt my cheeks burn with humiliation, but I couldn’t tear my gaze away from Mateo. He would fix this. He would tell her she was wrong. He would claim me.
But he didn’t.
His jaw clenched tightly, and for a long moment, he said nothing. The mate bond pulsed between us, strong and insistent, begging him to reach for me. I could feel his wolf fighting, could see the conflict flashing in his golden eyes.
“Mateo,” I said softly, my voice trembling. “I felt it. You felt it too. We’re mates.”
The whispers grew louder. Some wolves looked shocked. Others looked amused. A few looked angry.
Mateo’s gaze hardened as he finally spoke, his voice low and cold.
“This has to be a mistake.”
My heart stuttered. “What… what do you mean?”
He pulled his arm free from Isabella’s grasp, but not to take my hand. Instead, he took a step back—away from me.
“The pack is facing threats from rogues on every border,” he said, his tone growing sharper. “We need a Luna who can fight beside me, lead beside me. Someone strong enough to protect our people and continue our bloodline with power. Not…” His eyes flicked over me again, and this time there was no warmth in them. “Not a weak omega.”
The words hit me like a physical slap. I stumbled back a step, tears instantly filling my eyes.
“But the Goddess chose—” I started, my voice breaking.
“I don’t care what the Goddess intended tonight,” Mateo cut me off, his alpha aura flaring powerfully. The force of it pushed down on me, forcing my head to bow slightly in submission. “I, Mateo Vargas, future Alpha of the Eclipse Pack, reject you, Camila Rivera, as my fated mate and future Luna.”
The rejection slammed into me with brutal force. Pain exploded in my chest, so sharp and intense I gasped and fell to my knees on the cool grass. It felt like my heart was being torn in two, the fragile new bond ripping apart thread by thread.
Tears streamed down my face as laughter and murmurs spread through the crowd. Isabella smirked triumphantly, looping her arm through Mateo’s again. He didn’t stop her.
I looked up at him through blurred vision, searching for any sign of regret, any hint that this was a mistake he would take back.
But his golden eyes were cold. Distant.
And in that moment, something inside me broke.
Yet beneath the shattering pain, a tiny spark of anger flickered to life.
This wasn’t the end of my story.
Not yet.
