The person on the other end of the line sounded extremely anxious. Before Kai could even speak, a middle-aged woman’s voice rang loudly through the phone.
“Kai, where are you? Why haven’t you been answering anyone’s calls?”
Last night, while he and Edward had been tangled up in bed, the phone really had rung countless times. But neither of them had the time, or the interest to answer it. At some point, Kai had casually muted the phone and tossed it aside so the noise would not interrupt his fun.
“Shouldn’t you know exactly where I am?” Kai replied coldly.
The moment the words left his mouth, he pressed his lips tightly together, struggling to suppress the surge of emotions rising inside him.
The other end fell silent for several seconds before the woman finally reacted.
“What are you talking about? If we knew where you were, why would we be this worried? Didn’t you see all the missed calls on your phone? Your father and I called you more than twenty times last night.”
Kai knew that condemning someone based solely on a dream sounded utterly ridiculous.
But he had always been a deeply suspicious person, someone who lacked any real sense of security.
So if he could not prove his adoptive parents innocent this time, then he knew he would spend the rest of his life trapped in doubt and unease.
“Were you unable to find me…” he suddenly asked in a low voice, “or was Director Marcus Doyle unable to find me?”
Silence fell over the line once again.
A moment later, Claire Bennett - Kai’s adoptive mother - finally spoke, her voice stiff and uneasy.
“Kai… what are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
That tiny hesitation in her voice was enough for Kai to almost completely confirm that she was lying.
So he continued testing her.
“Why were you looking for me? That old bastard went into the room and couldn’t find me, so he started questioning you, right?” Kai’s voice turned colder and colder. “Selling your adopted son in exchange for a future for your biological son… you really had everything figured out, didn’t you?”
“How… how do you know that?” Claire Bennett stammered.
Kai Mercer felt his heart sink instantly.
So it was real?
His adoptive parents really had thrown him onto some old director’s bed in exchange for a role for Elliot.
That dream had actually become reality.
Then what about the car accident? What about losing his legs? Losing his voice?
A crushing wave of panic surged through him so violently that he could barely breathe.
Tightening his grip on the phone, Kai gritted his teeth and said,
“How could I not know? You drugged me and threw me into Marcus Doyle’s room in exchange for a supporting role in a drama series for your precious son. Am I wrong?”
Kai truly felt disappointed. They had raised him for ten years. Even if he could never see them as his real parents, he had still treated them with sincerity and gratitude. Over the past two years, after moving out and starting work, whenever he had extra money, he would send some back to them.
And yet this was how they repaid him.
What they had done was no different from stabbing a knife into his chest and tearing his heart apart.
On the other end of the call, Claire was momentarily speechless after being cornered by his accusations. After stammering for a while, she finally forced out an explanation.
“Kai, we were trying to help you. Marcus Doyle is one of the most respected directors in the industry. If he takes a liking to you, your entire future could change. With someone like him supporting you, getting roles would be easy.”
Tears streamed down Kai’s cheeks, yet his eyes burned with fury, his voice turning sharper and more vicious with every word.
“If it’s such a great opportunity, then why don’t you send your own son to sleep with him instead? Why go through all this trouble to set me up?”
The person on the other end paused briefly before the woman’s strained voice rang out again.
“Kai… how can you talk about your brother like that? Your father and I raised you for so many years. Now we’re only asking you to do one thing to repay us. Is that really so impossible?”
Kai laughed. But there was no warmth in that laughter at all.
“Who asked you to raise me?”
His voice slowed, each word sounding as though it were forced out through gritted teeth.
“My father was a fallen soldier. He died in the line of duty protecting people like you. Even without you, I still would’ve inherited his assets, received government survivor benefits, and grown up just fine. And you really think you’re my benefactors?” His breathing trembled slightly with rage. “You pretended to adopt me out of kindness, only to force me to repay you like this today?”
The woman hurriedly cut him off.
“Kai, can you stop being so stubborn? We’ve always loved you. We only did this for your future. Where did you go last night? Hurry back and apologize to Director Doyle. As long as he’s willing to let this go, your future will still be bright.”
Kai let out a cold laugh before replying,
“Last night was my first time. Of course I was going to find someone young and hot to enjoy it with. As for that old man…”
He paused briefly, the corner of his lips curling into a mocking smile.
“The three of you can take turns serving him yourselves. Maybe if you manage to satisfy him enough, all three of you will land roles and debut together.”
Kai’s eyes were already drenched with tears. His face looked pale and fragile, as though he might shatter at any moment. Yet the words coming out of his mouth were vicious to the extreme.
His appearance and his sharp tongue simply did not match at all.
Without waiting for Claire Bennett to respond, he continued coldly,
“And don’t start talking about raising me like you did me some huge favor. These past few years, my education was covered, and my living expenses came from government benefits. At most, you people gave me two meals a day.” His voice turned even colder. “Out of consideration for those meals, I won’t make a bigger issue out of this. Otherwise, the next thing waiting for you would be a lawsuit from my lawyer.”
The moment he finished speaking, Kai hung up without hesitation, refusing to give the other side another chance to twist the conversation further.
