I can get married to your boss
“You will get married to Gerald, the son of Mr Collins. I'm not asking for your opinion, I'm telling you what you're to do!”
The words kept resounding in Anora’s head as she walked down the street of Lexton.
There were little traces of dried tears on her face. For the past three days, her parents have been forcing her to get married to a short, bald, pot-bellied politician.
She tried all she could to knock some sense into her parents, even threatening them with suicide. As it seems, they don't care about her life at all
Her father, Mr Sinclair, brought it up that day again and said he would terminate her admission to Philwan University if she didn't do as he said
Anora lashed out at him and ran out of the house.
She was only eighteen and wasn't ready to get married. Even if she would, it would be to someone of her own choice!
How cruel of her father to want to sell her off to a nasty man for his own selfish benefits
She knew her parents didn't really care about her, but she didn't know it was to such an extent
They didn't mind that Gerald is a dishonest man and an infamous womanizer
Anora wiped the tears that couldn't stop falling. She knew running away from home wouldn't stop her father from getting her married to Gerald
He would stop at nothing to get what he wants, especially if there's a huge benefit attached.
And, she had nowhere else to go. Eventually, she would have to return home
“Why?” She managed to say
Why did God give her such monsters as parents? Why didn't she have normal, loving parents like everyone else? Why was she so unfortunate?
Growing up wasn't easy for her. Days of neglect from her parents it was torture. She'd pretend her eyes didn't turn red whenever her friends spoke about the things their parents do for them
As she walked further away from the main street, she soon got to a more quiet area
She heard whispers of some men
“What do we do now? We're in big s**t! Boss is going to rip us off”
“Damn, we're as good as dead”
“How did this happen? We had everything perfectly planned out”
Anora stopped in her tracks and rushed to the back of the huge tree in front of her. She carefully poked her head outside to peep
She saw three men dressed in similar outfits. Black shirt and black trousers
One was leaning against a black car while the other two were pacing about. All with obvious worry etched on their faces
“Try calling Janet again” The tallest of the three said
“I tried several times already. Her phone is switched off. I think she stood us up. How dare she! Does she realize what mess she has thrown us into?” The bulkiest of them said
“Fvck!!” The third man cussed as he looked through his phone
“What?” The other two echoed
“Eldest master has already landed. He's in the airport, preparing to go to the mansion” He replied
“That's it! Our families better start planning our funeral. Master is going to rip us apart” The tallest one said and ran his hands roughly through his hair in frustration
Anora stood behind the tree with her ears pricked. Her interest was piqued. Those men's appearances stood out, enough to draw everyone's attention to themselves
What were they discussing? It seems like they were in some sort of trouble with their boss. But why? They looked like they were awaiting their death sentences
“Maybe we can arrange another lady for master?”
Anora slightly pulled her brows together. So technically, they were in trouble because they were unable to get a woman for their boss?
Doesn't make any sense! There were thousands of girls in the city to pick from
“There's no time. Eldest master said the first person he wants to meet when he gets to the mansion is master's wife. Unless a woman falls from heaven who will agree to get married to master. Then, we're in hot soup” The third one, Jared, looked at the paper in his hands again
“Exactly! What if Eldest master’s health fails when he discovers that master isn't married yet. Master will bury us alive! We all know how much Master loves his grandfather! ” The bulkiest one, Mounts, widened his eyes in horror as he started to imagine what it's like gasping for air in a coffin
“How about we take a lady home and get her to pretend to be master's wife?” The tallest one, Terry, lit up as though he found the light at the end of a tunnel
“That won't work. Eldest master plans to remain in the country permanently. He will find out sooner or later that the lady's a fake”
As Anora listened to their conversation, she couldn't help but have a debate within herself
What's with strangers getting married? What's wrong with the world?!
She shook her head and decided to go her own way. She had been so caught up in those men's conversation that she almost forgot what dilemma she was in herself
She needed to figure out a way to solve the problem she had at hand
She turned around and was about to take a step. Her leg stopped midway in the air as a thought hit her
“What if…..
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a loud bang on the car's door
She was caught off guard and miscalculated her foot placement. She fell to the ground with a light thud
“Ouch”
“Who's there?” She heard one of the men say
“Is anyone there?! Come out” The other man called out
Anora’s heart beat faster. She got up from the ground, dusted her dress and stepped away from the back of the tree
“Hello” She said with a nervous wave
“It's just a passerby. Let's go guys” Mounts said
“Wait! I can get married to your boss”
