The Driveway Into The Shadows

332 Words
The engine growled as Luca sped down the winding Tuscan road, moonlight slicing through tall cypress trees like blades of warning. Elena’s fingers clenched the edge of her seat, the flash drive burning hot in her palm despite its cold metal. Neither spoke. Not because there was nothing to say— but because everything they said now had weight. Consequence. “Where are we going?” she finally asked, voice hushed, as if the night itself might be listening. “There’s someone in Florence,” Luca said. “A journalist. Underground. He’s been after your father’s dealings for years but could never connect the pieces. Until now.” Elena’s chest tightened. “You’re talking about exposing everything?” Luca glanced at her, his eyes unreadable in the dark. “Unless you’re ready to disappear forever, yes.” She turned to the window. Her reflection stared back—haunted, hardened, changed. The girl who arrived in Greece with silk dresses and naïve dreams was gone. A truck suddenly swerved into their lane, headlights blinding. Luca jerked the wheel, the Jeep skidding off-road, tires crunching gravel. They slammed to a stop near a crumbling roadside chapel. Elena gasped. “Was that random?” “No,” Luca said, already reaching for the gun under the seat. “They found us faster than I thought.” Her heart pounded. In the distance, the truck's brake lights lit up. Then reversed. “Inside,” Luca ordered, nodding toward the chapel. They ran through its rusted doors, ducking behind pews just as the truck doors slammed shut outside. “Luca,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I’m scared.” He turned to her, brushing a tear from her cheek. “Then use it, Elena. Fear keeps us alive.” Footsteps echoed on the gravel outside. Shadows moved past the stained-glass window. And in that fractured light, Elena made a vow. If the world was going to hunt her like a villain… She’d learn to be one.
