uninvited Ghost

The creak was soft—barely a whisper—but it sliced through the silence like a scream. Luca spun, his hand already reaching for the weapon tucked beneath his jacket. Elena’s breath caught in her throat as she stepped backward, clutching the journal tight to her chest. From the shadows of the hallway, a man emerged. Older, but unmistakably familiar—his eyes were a darker version of hers, and his presence carried the same heavy air her father had once possessed. “Uncle Matteo?” Elena’s voice was hoarse with disbelief. He didn’t smile. “You shouldn’t have come here, Elena.” Luca stepped between them. “You followed us?” “I never stopped watching,” Matteo said. His gaze flicked to the open safe. “You found it, then. The truth your father died trying to protect.” Elena’s fingers tightened around the journal. “Why did he keep this hidden from me? Who are those men in the photo?” Matteo’s jaw tensed. “Powerful men. Dangerous. Your father tried to expose them once—thought justice was more important than loyalty. He paid for it.” “And now you’re here to what? Silence me too?” she snapped, fire rising in her voice. A shadow of something—shame, perhaps—passed over Matteo’s face. “No. I’m here to make sure you don’t make the same mistake.” Luca’s voice was low and dangerous. “If she runs, she runs with me. You try to stop her, you’ll have to go through me.” Matteo didn’t flinch. “You think you can protect her from all of this? From them?” “I already am.” For a beat, no one moved. The air in the room was electric, each of them standing at a crossroads they hadn’t chosen. Matteo finally looked at Elena again. “If you’re going to run, do it smart. That flash drive holds names. Codes. Accounts. Enough to bury them—or get you buried.” And then he turned and disappeared down the hallway, his footsteps swallowed by the echoing silence. Elena exhaled shakily, feeling the weight of the journal in her hands. “We need to go. Now.” Luca took her hand. “Where?” “Somewhere they can’t find us,” she whispered. “Somewhere we can start rewriting the story.” Outside, the night had deepened—but so had her resolve.
