The Escape
Lila’s bare feet pounded wet cobblestones, her wedding dress ripping on jagged thorns as she fled Victor Crane’s mansion. Rain lashed her face, the gold ring on her finger a burning shackle. Engines growled behind her, Victor’s men, hunting her through the city’s dark veins. “You’re mine now, Lila,” he’d sneered at the altar, his grip bruising her wrist. His eyes held no love, only a hunger for control, sealed by the deal her father had struck with Victor’s father, Senator Harrington. A “friendly covenant,” they’d called it, to protect their wealth and bury secrets. Her mother’s mysterious death had pushed her into this cage. She’d rather die than stay trapped. She darted into an alley, the city’s underbelly stinking of rust and decay. Flickering neon signs cast eerie shadows. Her ankle twisted on a broken curb, pain spiking through her leg. “No!” she gasped, scrambling up, blood oozing from a thorn-slashed forearm. Heavy boots crunched closer, three men, their grins sharp as the knife one held. “Crane’s bride, running already?” the leader taunted, twirling the blade. “He pays good for strays.” “Get back!” Lila shouted, snatching a rusted pipe from the muck. She swung, clipping his arm. He cursed, but another grabbed her hair, yanking hard. The knife grazed her arm, and she yelped, the pipe clattering away. Headlights blazed, tires screeching. A car skidded to a halt, and a tall figure stepped out, his voice cold as steel. “Drop her. Now.” The thugs froze, then bolted, their footsteps fading. Lila slumped against the wall, clutching her bleeding arm, ankle throbbing. The stranger approached, his scarred face half-lit by a streetlight. His dark eyes pinned her, sharp and unreadable. “Who the hell are you?” Lila panted, her voice raw. “Ezra,” he said, extending a hand. “You want to live? Move.” “Why help me?” she snapped, eyeing his calloused palm. Her father’s warning echoed: Trust no one, Lila. “You see another option?” Ezra shot back, glancing at the alley’s mouth. “They’re circling back.” Her heart raced. Victor’s men were close, and her father’s deal had already cost her too much. She grabbed Ezra’s hand, his grip steady as he pulled her to a battered black car. The engine roared, and the city blurred past, neon streaking through the rain. “Who’s after you?” Ezra asked, eyes flicking to the rearview mirror. “Victor Crane,” Lila said, pressing her sleeve to her wound. “You know him?” “His name’s on half the city,” Ezra said, dodging her question. “What’d he do?” “Tried to own me,” she muttered, Victor’s cruel laugh ringing in her ears. “You’ve got secrets too, don’t you?” Ezra’s jaw tightened, his scar stark under the dashboard light. “Everyone does.” “Where are we going?” she pressed, wincing as her ankle throbbed. “Somewhere safe,” he said, voice clipped. “Stop talking. You’re bleeding too much.” The car screeched to a stop at a crumbling estate, its stone walls tangled with ivy, windows dark as dead eyes. Inside, it smelled of damp wood and dust. Ezra pointed to a worn couch. “Sit.” “You live here?” Lila asked, limping over, her voice sharp with distrust. “For now,” he said, grabbing a first-aid kit. He knelt, cleaning her arm with quick, practiced moves. She hissed, and he paused, his touch gentling. “Hold still. It’s bad.” “You a doctor?” she asked, watching his steady hands. “No,” he said, eyes meeting hers briefly—dark, haunted, like he carried a weight she couldn’t see. “Just been through enough fights.” “Fights with who?” she pressed, her pulse quickening as his fingers brushed her skin, warm despite his cold demeanor. “People like Crane,” he said, wrapping her arm in gauze. Their eyes locked, and for a moment, something flickered in his gaze—pain, maybe, or something softer. She pulled back, her heart tripping. Victor’s cruelty had taught her to fear closeness, but Ezra’s touch felt… different. “Bathroom’s down the hall,” he said, standing. “Clothes are there. Clean up.” “How long am I safe here?” she asked, her voice hard. Ezra paused at the door, not turning. “Long enough.” He vanished into the creaking house. Lila’s chest tightened. Safe? She’d trusted her father’s promises, and they’d led to Victor. She hobbled to a cluttered desk, papers strewn beside a whiskey bottle. Her fingers brushed a manila folder, half-hidden under a newspaper. Curiosity outran caution. She glanced at the door, Ezra’s footsteps were faint and flipped it open. Her breath stopped. Ezra’s face stared from a grainy photo, the word WANTED in bold red. Below, scribbled in ink: “Senator Crane’s orders, armed and dangerous.” Victor’s father. Her blood ran cold. The man who’d saved her was a fugitive, tied to the same family that caged her. Her hands shook, the folder slipping as Ezra’s boots thudded back. “Lila!” His voice cut through the silence, sharp and close. “What are you doing?” She shoved the folder under the papers, her wound pulsing with her panic. The door swung open, Ezra’s silhouette looming, his eyes narrowing to slits. “See something you shouldn’t have?” he asked, his tone low, dangerous. Lila’s mouth went dry. She’d fled one monster, had she just run to another?
